๐Ÿงฌ FROM OOCYTE TO EMBRYO TO RECIPIENT โ€” THE FUTURE OF GENETICS IS HERE! ๐Ÿงฌ

At Azores Veterinary Practice + AzoGenex, we offer a complete advanced reproductive program designed to help producers accelerate genetic progress and maximize the potential of their elite females.

Our team can manage the entire process:

๐Ÿฅš 1. LAPAROSCOPIC OPU โ€” Azores Veterinary Practice
Oocytes are harvested from genetically valuable donors using Laparoscopic O**m Pick-Up (LOPU).

๐Ÿ”ฌ 2. IVF โ€” AzoGenex
The collected oocytes are processed through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), allowing embryos to be produced from your selected genetics.

๐Ÿ‘ 3. LAPAROSCOPIC EMBRYO TRANSFER โ€” Azores Veterinary Practice
Viable embryos are transferred laparoscopically into carefully synchronized recipient females.

โžก๏ธ One coordinated program. From OPU โ†’ IVF โ†’ Embryo โ†’ Transfer.

This technology allows producers to multiply elite genetics, accelerate herd improvement, and make greater genetic progress in fewer generations.

๐Ÿ– TODAYโ€™S C-SECTION: SWINE โ€” BUT THATโ€™S NOT ALL! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘

Today we were back in the surgery suite performing a C-section on a sow โ€” another successful delivery and another reminder that at Azores Veterinary Practice, our surgical capabilities extend across multiple livestock species.

Our team performs C-sections in:

๐Ÿ„ Bovine
๐Ÿ Caprine
๐Ÿ‘ Ovine
๐Ÿ– Swine

Each species comes with its own unique challenges, from anesthesia and surgical technique to fetal extraction, neonatal resuscitation, and post-operative care. Having the experience, equipment, surgical facilities, and dedicated team to handle these cases is critical when every minute matters.

Whether itโ€™s a difficult dystocia in a cow, a kid or lamb that needs help entering the world, or a sow experiencing farrowing complications โ€” weโ€™re equipped to help.

๐Ÿ‘ C-Section ๐Ÿ‘- Uterine torsion โ†’ incomplete cervical dilation: a common double challenge in sheep & goats
Uterine torsion is less frequent in small ruminants than in cattle, but when it occurs it can quickly become an emergency. After successful correction (by rolling or surgery), many ewes and does still fail to dilate the cervix fully โ€” a secondary โ€œringwombโ€ that blocks vaginal delivery.
Key points to remember:
โ€ข Single-fetus pregnancies carry higher risk.
โ€ข Right-sided torsions are more common.
โ€ข Early cases (within ~18โ€“24 h) often respond to careful rolling or modified Schafferโ€™s method.
โ€ข Post-correction incomplete cervical dilation is frequent โ€” gentle fanning/feathering of the cervix ยฑ smooth-muscle relaxants may help, but donโ€™t delay cesarean if progress stalls.
โ€ข Prompt diagnosis and intervention dramatically improve dam survival and future fertility.
Always perform a thorough vaginal exam when labor stalls. Pre-cervical torsions can look exactly like simple ringwomb until you explore further or open the abdomen.
Save a life (and a pregnancy) by recognizing this sequence early. Tag a colleague who works with small ruminants!

๐Ÿ„ THREEโ€™S A CROWDโ€ฆ OR IS IT? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„

Finding a pregnant cow during a routine herdcheck is always good news.

Finding TRIPLETS? Now that gets our attention! ๐Ÿคฏ

Bovine triplet pregnancies are extremely uncommon. In one large dairy study, among cows diagnosed with multiple pregnancies, 98.8% were twins, 1.1% were triplets, and only 0.08% were quadruplets. (PubMed Central (PMC))

This particular case is a perfect example of why ultrasound during routine herdchecks can tell us so much more than simply whether a cow is pregnant.

๐Ÿ”Ž With ultrasound, we can evaluate:
โ€ข Pregnancy status
โ€ข Number of fetuses
โ€ข Location of the pregnancy
โ€ข Fetal viability and development
โ€ข Uterine structures
โ€ข Ovaries and reproductive structures

In this cow, what started as a routine pregnancy examination turned into the discovery of a very unusual pregnancy โ€” THREE FETUSES! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ„

Multiple pregnancies can carry additional reproductive and management challenges, making early identification valuable for herd management and planning. Ultrasound allows us to see what is happening inside the uterus rather than simply feeling that a cow is pregnant. (PubMed)

At Azores Veterinary Practice, our goal during herdchecks isnโ€™t just to say โ€œpregnant.โ€

Itโ€™s to gather as much reproductive information as possible โ€” because the more we can see, the better we can manage the herd. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ„

๐Ÿ– SWINE C-SECTIONS: WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS ๐Ÿ–

Difficult farrowings can quickly become an emergency. While most sows farrow normally, certain situations may require a C-section to save the sow, the pigletsโ€”or both.

๐Ÿ”น When might a C-section be necessary?
โ€ข Prolonged or stalled farrowing
โ€ข Strong abdominal straining with no piglet being delivered
โ€ข Malpositioned, oversized, or obstructed piglets
โ€ข Uterine torsion or other reproductive abnormalities
โ€ข Fetal death with obstruction
โ€ข Failure to respond to appropriate obstetrical intervention
โ€ข Maternal exhaustion or declining condition

โš ๏ธ Potential complications of dystocia include:
โ€ข Piglet death from prolonged oxygen deprivation
โ€ข Uterine trauma or rupture
โ€ข Vaginal or cervical injuries
โ€ข Metritis and other postpartum infections
โ€ข Retained fetuses or membranes
โ€ข Severe maternal illness or death

โฐ Early recognition is critical. The longer a sow experiences an obstructed or prolonged farrowing, the greater the risk to both the sow and her litter.

At Azores Veterinary Practice, our surgical facilities and veterinary team are equipped to provide emergency reproductive and surgical care when swine need it mostโ€”from diagnosis and obstetrical intervention to C-section surgery and postoperative care.

๐Ÿท Healthy sow. Healthy piglets. Better outcomes.

๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ”Ž PREGNANCY CONFIRMEDโ€ฆ AGAIN!

Did you know that a second pregnancy ultrasound at 60โ€“70 days of gestation can be one of the most valuable reproductive management tools in your herd?

A cow can test pregnant early and still experience embryonic or early fetal loss before reaching 60โ€“70 days. Thatโ€™s why confirming the pregnancy again at this stage gives us important information about the true reproductive status of the herd.

๐Ÿ“… Why 60โ€“70 days?

This period is an important checkpoint for pregnancy establishment and fetal development. By reconfirming pregnancies, we can:

โœ… Identify cows that have lost a pregnancy
โœ… Avoid carrying open cows unnecessarily
โœ… Get open cows back into a reproductive program sooner
โœ… Rebreed cows and potentially shorten the time between calvings
โœ… Improve reproductive efficiency and herd management
โœ… Make better decisions about nutrition and reproductive investments

๐Ÿ”ฌ Pregnancy diagnosis isnโ€™t just about finding pregnant cows โ€” itโ€™s about finding the cows that are no longer pregnant while there is still time to act.

At Azores Veterinary Practice, reproductive ultrasound allows us to monitor pregnancies and help producers make timely decisions for the health and productivity of their herds.

๐Ÿ„ Confirm. Monitor. Rebreed. Improve.
