Pumpkin patches, fall festivals, apple orchards, hayrides, crisp morning walks, there’s nothing quite like fall! And of course, we want our pups to enjoy the season with us.
Before you load up the car and head out for some autumn adventures, here are a few tips, tricks & safety reminders to keep your fall fun pawsitive:
Pumpkin Patch Paws
Check ahead to make sure dogs are welcome, some farms have restrictions.
Keep your pup on a leash, even if they’re usually reliable off-leash. Standard length is recommended.
Watch for uneven ground, mud, holes, hay bales, and other obstacles.
Keep them away from pumpkins, gourds, and decorations they might chew or swallow.
Take a portable water bowl, fresh water, and waste bags.
Be mindful of farm animals, guardian dogs, and other pets and how your dog may react.
Fall Foods are People Food
Apple slices, pumpkin, and other seasonal treats can be dog-friendly in moderation but many fall goodies are not! Keep pups away from foods containing chocolate, caramel, grapes/raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, and excessive fatty or sugary ingredients.
Watch What They Sniff
Fallen leaves, mushrooms, insects, plants, and unknown objects can be tempting to investigate. A curious nose is great…until it finds something it shouldn't eat!
Road Trip Ready
Heading somewhere new? Make sure your pup has proper identification, current contact information, and is safely secured in the vehicle. A familiar blanket or favorite toy can also make the trip a little easier.
Know Your Dog's Limits
Crowds, loud noises, children, unfamiliar dogs, and new environments can be overwhelming. If your pup is stressed, it's okay to take a break or head home. Not every dog enjoys every adventure, and that's perfectly okay!
Don't Forget the Weather
Fall temperatures can change quickly. A chilly morning can turn into a warm afternoon, and outdoor events may mean lots of walking. Bring water and give your pup opportunities to rest.
And finally…take the picture!
Because the best part of fall adventures is making memories with your best friend.
