WHY BRING YOUR SENIOR PET IN FOR AN EXAM? Sometimes when pets age, owners slack off on exams and prevention. But, the reality is, senior pets need MORE exams, and MORE HELP….not less!
Things we can address during bi- annual wellness exams that maximize quality of life in an aging pet:

1. Mobility and pain control, joint supplements and healthy weight
2. Screening testing for conditions we can treat and that may benefit from dietary modifications ( bladder infections, early kidney disease, hypertension)
3. Monitoring for heart murmurs and instituting medications that delay or possibly prevent progression to heart failure
4. Bloodwork to check for health conditions that are treatable or can be slowed with diet changes or medications.
5. Painful dental disease that affects quality of life
6. Mental changes and household changes that can help seniors adapt

Please remember dogs and cats can’t sweat! Please be very cautious with activity during the heat of the day, especially with elderly pets and those with short noses or thick coats.

It’s algal bloom time of year and almost all reservoirs are currently affected, and standing water elsewhere is at risk. Here is a link to affected reservoirs and information. Avoid letting your dogs swim in warmer standing water this time of year, especially if visible algae. Rivers and running water are typically fine.
