Which means today it is scientifically mandatory to:
✅ Give extra belly rubs
✅ Let them have “just one more” treat
✅ Tell them they’re a good boy/girl approximately 500 times
✅ Pretend not to notice when they steal the couch

We are SO excited to officially announce we have added another veterinarian to the Ada Animal team! Please welcome Dr. Savannah Canova:

Dr. Canova completed her undergraduate degree at Boise State, where she worked in research labs and interned as a zookeeper at Zoo Boise. She then moved to Australia to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Melbourne. She is passionate about surgery, exotic and wildlife medicine, and One Health- the connection between animals, people, and the environment. Dr. Canova adores all animals and looks forward to meeting your furry, feathered, and scaled family members! She is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality care while making visits as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Outside of work, she enjoys pottery, soccer, traveling, backpacking and snowboarding.

When bad air quality or wildfire smoke hits, our pets can be just as sensitive to poor air as we are—especially brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, seniors, and pets with asthma or heart conditions.

Here are 4 quick tips to protect your pets when the Air Quality Index (AQI) spikes:

1️⃣ Keep Walks Short: Save the long runs or games of fetch for better air days. Stick to brief bathroom breaks outside.

2️⃣ Create a Clean Zone Indoors: Keep windows and doors closed. Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you have one!

3️⃣ Wipe 'Em Down: Particles can settle on their fur. Give their paws and coat a quick wipe with a damp towel when they come inside.

4️⃣ Watch for Warning Signs: Call us right away if you notice excessive coughing, wheezing, gagging, watery eyes, or unusual lethargy.

Pyometra is one of the common emergencies we see in unspayed female dogs — and it's a big reason we recommend spaying. Here's what every pet parent should know:

🔍 What is it?
Pyometra is a serious bacterial infection that fills the uterus with pus. It typically develops 4-8 weeks after a heat cycle, when hormonal changes make the uterine lining more vulnerable to infection.

⚠️ Warning signs:
🩸 Vaginal discharge
🎈 A swollen or distended belly
😴 Lethargy
🍽️ Loss of appetite
🤢 Vomiting
💧 Increased thirst or urination

⏱️ Why it's an emergency
Left untreated, pyometra can lead to sepsis, kidney failure, or a ruptured uterus — all of which can be fatal. This is not a "wait and see" condition.

🏥 Treatment
Emergency surgery (an ovariohysterectomy) to remove the infected uterus and ovaries, along with IV fluids and antibiotics. Most dogs improve dramatically within 24-48 hours of surgery.

🛡️ The best prevention? Spaying.
Spaying your dog while she's young and healthy essentially eliminates the risk of pyometra — and it's far less costly and risky than emergency surgery later on.
