What if your pet has been showing signs they're struggling... and you didn't realize it?

A declining quality of life in pets isn't always obvious. Changes often happen gradually, making them easy to overlook. A pet who once loved walks may hesitate to go outside. A social companion may spend more time alone. Small changes can be your pet's way of telling you they need extra support.

Understanding the signs of declining quality of life can help you make informed, compassionate decisions about your pet's comfort, hospice care, and end-of-life journey.

Just after Apollo's 12th birthday, he began having difficulty walking on his own, and his medication was no longer providing relief. His family chose to give him the best last day, complete with a car ride, new toys, and a picnic filled with all of his favorite foods.

When it was time to say goodbye, Apollo passed peacefully at home, surrounded by the people who loved him most.

His family shared:

"Lap of Love arrived at the end of our picnic and with a full stomach and tail wags, Apollo simply took a nap. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. The veterinarian was so kind and compassionate. I now work in a veterinary office, and any client who chooses home euthanasia, Lap of Love is my only suggestion. Thank you for helping my boy transition in a way that was so peaceful."

We are honored to have been part of Apollo's journey and grateful to his family for sharing their experience.

If Lap of Love supported your family, we invite you to submit your pet's tribute for a chance to be featured on our social channels.

The lives of our pets may be measured in years, but the love they leave behind knows no timeline.

On World Pet Memorial Day, we honor the companions who made us laugh, comforted us through difficult moments, and filled our lives with unconditional love. Though they may no longer walk beside us, the memories we shared continue to shape us every day.

We invite you to share a photo and tell us about a pet you'll always carry in your heart. We'd be honored to remember them with you. ๐Ÿ’œ

Before they go gray around the muzzle, many senior pets begin experiencing changes we canโ€™t always see.

A dog who suddenly startles easily. A cat who seems less interested in favorite activities. A pet who gets confused in familiar spaces.

These subtle shifts can be linked to age-related vision loss, hearing loss, decreased sense of smell, or cognitive decline. The good news is that many senior dogs and cats continue to thrive with a few thoughtful adjustments at home.

Understanding the signs of sensory and cognitive changes can help you support your aging companion's comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

๐Ÿ’ง Is your senior dog or cat suddenly drinking a lot more water than usual?

While it might seem harmless, increased thirst can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health condition. In this video, Dr. Mary Gardner explains some common reasons older pets may start drinking more water and when it's time to talk to your veterinarian.

Knowing what changes to watch for can help you support your pet's comfort and quality of life as they age.
