We are in our last couple of weeks for planting/seeding for a fall or winter crop harvest.

Folks often think it is just the cold that prevents growth during the Ber months and early new year. However, the real trouble is the shortened days and less light hours.

Crops need at least 10 hours of sunlight to continue their growth otherwise they go dormant. It’s important to make sure your crops get to at least 75% maturity before day lengths dip below 10 hours.

Here in the Colorado front range our final 10 hour day of the year is November 15th. So to calculate if you can still plant and get a harvest of a crop you’ll need to do a bit of math.

Determine the crops days to maturity and days to germinate.

Multiply the days to maturity x .75
Add days to germination

Your answer will give you the number of days required to get the crop to 75% maturation.

Now count backwards from November 15th and see if you still have that many days remaining. If so, get those seeds in the ground and extend your harvest season!

Happy growing yall!

Still working on getting everyone else on board with this crop but 100% the French Dandelion Greens have become a staple in my diet. With the start of September we begin our winter food prep canning, curing and freezing what we can from the harvest to assure we extend the food through the cold months ahead. Best believe that includes these greens. We froze several bags tonight for green smoothies that cleanse the liver and offer so much nourishment. Do a quick Google search on their health benefits. They are bitter for sure but prepared correctly they’re amazing for you. Grab some for yourself this weekend at our farmstand and Your body will thank you!
