💚🐴 Grateful Hearts, Meaningful Partnerships, and Happy Trails! 🇺🇸🙏

What an incredible day at 3F Ranch & Boarding! We are so grateful for our longstanding partnership with Willow Ranch Equine Assisted Counseling. The work they do to support individuals through counseling, veterans, and others in our community is truly phenomenal. Being partnered with an organization that makes such a meaningful difference in people's lives is an honor we don't take for granted. 💚

Today, we welcomed veterans to the ranch for a day of connection, learning, and time with the horses. We started with grooming, moved on to tacking, spent time visiting and getting to know one another, and were even blessed with a visit from Pastor Ray, who came out to meet the veterans. Then it was time to hit the trails! 🐎

As a horse person, one of the most rewarding parts of this work is witnessing what happens when the right horse meets the right person. You see personalities blossom, fears begin to fade, confidence grow, and challenges turn into accomplishments. Sometimes, the changes are subtle; other times, they're extraordinary. Every moment is a reminder of the unique connection between humans and horses.

Our beginner-friendly trails gave everyone an opportunity to enjoy a ride around the property. We also spent time in the arena, working on steering, patterns, and lessons, allowing the veterans to experience the difference between riding out on a trail and focusing on skills in the arena. Every one of them did an absolutely amazing job, and it was a joy to watch them learn, try new things, and accomplish so much!

At 3F, we are more than a large horse boarding facility. We are passionate about creating opportunities for people to connect with horses, discover their abilities, build confidence, and experience the many ways these incredible animals can enrich our lives.

To Willow Ranch, thank you for your continued partnership, your unwavering dedication to the people you serve, and the opportunity to be a small part of such meaningful work. We look forward to all the lives we will continue to touch together. 💚

DOES THE WAY WE KEEP AND INTERACT WITH HORSES INFLUENCE THEIR PERSONALITY?

We often talk about a horse’s personality as though it is something they simply arrive with – shaped by genetics, breed, s*x and age. But a large new study suggests that aspects of how horses are housed, ridden and managed, as well as their relationships with their owners, are also associated with differences in personality.

Researchers collected information on 2,767 horses and identified four broad personality dimensions: human sociability, horse sociability, attentiveness and neuroticism. Age, s*x and breed were important, but management and human-horse relationship factors were associated with personality scores too.

One particularly interesting finding involved what the researchers described as ‘quality time’. This was time spent with the horse without making specific demands, where they were free to interact or not, often involving positive experiences such as scratches or treats. Horses whose owners spent more of this undemanding time with them were rated as more sociable towards humans. Horses who had been with the same owner for longer were also rated as more human-sociable, while those who had experienced multiple changes of owner scored lower.

The horse's social environment was important too. Those housed mainly alone were found to be less sociable towards other horses than those housed with other horses. There are several possible explanations for this: owners may have fewer opportunities to observe sociable behaviour in individually housed horses, lack of social contact may affect horses’ social skills, or horses who have shown more conflict with others may be more likely to be housed alone in the first place. Whatever the explanation, it raises important questions about what prolonged individual housing may mean for horses socially.

Riding frequency was also associated with personality. Horses ridden more frequently tended to score higher for attentiveness and lower for neuroticism. But does regular riding influence these characteristics, or are calmer, more attentive horses simply more likely to be ridden frequently?

Importantly, this was a questionnaire-based study looking at horses at one point in time, so although it found relationships between personality and aspects of management, it doesn't tell us which is influencing which. Personality may influence the management choices humans make just as management may influence personality.

But maybe that is one of the study's most useful messages. A horse’s behaviour does not develop independently of their experiences. Their upbringing, social opportunities, interactions with humans, stability of relationships and everyday management all form part of the environment in which their behavioural tendencies are expressed and potentially develop.
