Ellie Mae probably
“Am I doing ‘engagement’ right?”

Lenny is working on two things in this video. one is his tone recall. And the other is his leash awareness. When he hears the tone he needs to return to my side as fast as possible. Leash awareness is when Lenny is able to stay connected with his handler when on leash at all times. When we stop, even in a free walk, he needs to stop and check in. The extended leash is a great training tool for these exercises as long as you are in an appropriate setting and you are working a dog who already understands the skill foundation. It is a proofing tool.

Lenny is working very hard to learn when certain forms of expression are appropriate and when they aren’t. In this session we allow Lenny to thoroughly enjoy himself. When the game is over he is given the cue. In this case it’s “all done.” This means the game is over. I take the toy he was engaged with away. This and the verbal cue informs Lenny that the other toys are no longer in play. In previous sessions we worked hard on the “leave it” command and here you can see the outcome of that work. Lenny is rewarded for this shift in behavior with simple physical contact. Plus, he knows another opportunity for play will present itself.

Playing ball or simply having a ball present completely distracts Lenny. When a ball is around he can’t focus or turn off the intensity that comes with it. While sometimes this energy is appropriate Lenny needs to also learn when it isn’t. In this short clip of a much longer session, Lenny is practicing impulse control around the high value item. We don’t reward with that item and send him to a high state of stimulation again. Rather we ask for an alternative and he can be rewarded for action. In this video we are building a down stay and combine the tone with the recall.

Another successful chill session for Beau. Took about 20 minutes of restlessness and a few corrections for inappropriate attention getting behaviors. But after that he lay calmly for a solid 45 mins while Sarah got some office work done. Sometimes training is simply learning how to do nothing.

The two ball method is a great way to teach an “out” without relying on food or punishment. Especially for a dog like Lenny who has a high toy drive. Lenny is following the rules of the game. No jumping, barking, or grabbing at my hands. These actions would equal a penalty and potentially an end to the activity. The rules are simple…drop the ball, get the ball. By slowly changing when I give the command and when I mark, Lenny is learning to put action with word. Just like we would do with food, eventually we wont need a “second ball” and be able to use the “out” for all kinds of things.

Very proud of Beau and his people. They have worked incredibly hard for this outcome. So nice for them to be able to enjoy the real world together.

This goofy boy is enrolled in Creekside’s hybrid day training program. He will spend 10 days working with us focusing on leash skills, energy management, and finding some healthy outlets for all that energy and natural drive. Then we will transition to private one-on-ones with the honey.
