I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I often want training to look/feel boring. That is the goal!

Stewart is a prime example of why I don’t post many flashy social media videos showing wild before and afters. In the moment, my goal is not to film and get “good content”. And oftentimes, you’re going to be watching 10 minutes of me randomly reinforcing offered calm behavior.

I laid down the mat, Stewart has a history of being highly reinforced for laying down and settling, he did this all on his own. He can be an anxious guy so whenever a person would pass by or he’d notice a noise, I’d toss him a treat to continue building a positive association. He wasn’t forced to stay on the mat, there was no punishment if he got up and moved around.

Many of the dogs I work with (and some of my own 🤣) may never get to this exact picture…*cough* herding dog problems. But the more unexciting your training sessions start to feel, the better 💜

June Snack Walks are live! Sign up through the link in my bio ☀️

Our last trip to Pinecliff Park was a hit so we decided to fit in TWO sessions! Lots of shade and some water for the dogs to cool off in. We’ll end the month with an evening stroll in Baker Park, which is a great chance to work around more distractions.

For anyone working on an AKC Fit Dog title, .dogs is a Fit Dog Club so Lela can help with that!

Snack Walks are open to clients of myself or Fitnacity who have been in training within the last year. If it’s been longer, or you want to see if these sessions would be a good fit for your dog, please reach out! These walks are a great opportunity to practice around other dogs in a controlled way while also working through real world distractions.

One of my favorite things to work on is integrating dogs with other animals, especially cats. It can be complex and requires a lot of attention on management, body language, and your specific dog’s personality.

Gypsy is VERY terrier and wants to chase her cat siblings at home, as they are very skittish and not a big fan of her existence. I wanted to test her out with some dog savvy cats and it’s clear she has zero aggression, just a lot of fixation and excitement triggered by movement. This makes it easier to develop a plan focused on building the cats’ confidence and preventing chasing while we can worry less that her intent is truly dangerous.

If you are interested in cat testing your dog, perhaps before adding a new family member or visiting relatives who own cats, I am always happy to help! Obi and Newt are happy to help too…in exchange for Churus 😂
