Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Cosmo is down in the field today chipping away at his heel (walk nicely!) command.

Jack is down in the field today working on Heel!

We talk about our pre-heel session, where we teach a dog to follow us backward in a straight line without a leash, building motivation and choice. We also work on stay with distractions like a rolling Tonka truck, and practice recall with a beep. The dog, Milo, is learning to listen and stay focused, which is new for him.

We talk about training a highly leash reactive dog named Teddy to heel perfectly at my side using an e-collar and consistent accountability. I demonstrate how the heel command requires 100% mental focus, leaving no bandwidth for reacting to other dogs. We also cover down-stay proofing with distractions and recall training, emphasizing the importance of clear boundaries and praise for compliance.

We work with Ms. Auggie, a six-year-old dog who was a puller before training, to achieve an off-leash heel in under three weeks. I demonstrate how to use tone and stim to correct errors like lagging or veering, and emphasize that the number on the collar varies based on many factors. We also cover down-stay with hand signals and recall, explaining how these commands are useful even indoors. I show how to transition from recall back to heel and stress setting boundaries early in the walk.

I'm in the training room with Lucy, going over basic commands she's already learned to test her listening skills. We practice recall with a tone, place, stay, and down, emphasizing that knowing a command doesn't guarantee compliance. Lucy does well, showing impulse control and focus, and we keep sessions efficient by not overdoing mastered skills.

We work with Auggie on reinforcing place and recall commands, using tone and stim to correct mistakes and build reliability. We show how to handle triggers like the crate and open doors, emphasizing that the dog must prioritize our commands over their desires.

We work with Teddy, a dog who previously refused commands, to proof his listening skills using recall, place bed, and down-stay exercises. We focus on impulse control and reliability, using e-collar tones and corrections to ensure he obeys despite triggers like an open crate door.

We take our dogs off property to test if a dog named Milo shows the big reactions his owner described, like screaming and being unbearable. We encounter a friendly dog owner but avoid interaction to focus on training. We observe Milo's behavior and note he's not reacting to Izzy, which is a good sign. We aim to catch him off guard to see his true responses.
