THE OLDEST OF THE EIGHT IS GOING HOME TODAY—HALF PINT!

These awesome folks are coming to pick up our sweet senior Chihuahua today—but first, they’re planning to hit the PAWSOME Thrift Sale down the street!

They have a special place in their hearts for the old gals. While so many people pass over senior dogs, they saw Half Pint, loved her and chose her.

They may find some great deals at the sale, but we already know the greatest treasure they’ll take home today.

SMALL SHELTER. BIG HEART.

These numbers tell part of our August story—but they don’t show the hours of cleaning, feeding, medicating, comforting, walking, socializing and loving every animal who comes through our doors.

They don’t show the frightened animals learning to trust, the sick ones beginning to heal or the lonely ones finally relaxing because someone sat beside them and showed them kindness.

We may be a small municipal shelter, but every animal who comes to us receives care, dignity and love. We do everything we can with the space, staff and resources we have—but we cannot do it alone.

Fosters give animals a break from shelter life, help us learn who they truly are in a home and open valuable kennel space so we can help the next animal who needs us.

Volunteers provide walks, enrichment, socialization, field trips and the extra individual attention our animals deserve.

If you have a little room in your home or a little time in your week, you can make a very BIG difference.

Pibbles and Janet Wood are both still waiting for homes—and they are only two of the many reasons this work matters.

BELLA GOT A SECOND CHANCE. NOW SHE NEEDS THE RIGHT ONE.

Bella's story with us started on July 14, when she was found in a church parking lot.

But here's the part we love: when we arrived to pick up this supposed "stray," Bella was playing fetch with a young child.

No panic. No drama. Just Bella, making the best of wherever she happened to be and finding herself a kid willing to throw the ball.

On July 31, Bella was adopted. We hoped that was the end of her shelter story.

Unfortunately, on August 28, she came back to us through no fault of her own. Bella simply had more energy than her home was prepared for. She needed more exercise, activity and opportunities to get that energy out.

And we've learned something important since she's been back:

Give Bella an outlet for that energy, and then watch what happens.

One of our volunteers took Bella out for an adventure, and said Bella needed to run some energy out at first — and then she was really fun.

She walks well on a leash. She leans into you for love. Talk to her and she'll tilt that head like she's hanging on every word.

On the trail she was alert, curious and interested in everything around her. And when she gets really excited, she has this joyful little jump-and-pounce move that just makes you smile.

She also LOVES apple/pumpkin treats.

Bella isn't looking for a home where she's expected to sit around all day and contain herself. She's looking for someone who enjoys walking, playing, exploring and actually DOING things with their dog.

And after the adventure?

That's when you get the affectionate girl who leans into you for love.

Maybe the biggest clue about Bella was there on Day One — a stray dog in a church parking lot who decided the best thing to do was play fetch with a kid.

That's Bella.

She tried home once. It wasn't quite the right fit.

SOMEBODY LOVED CHER...SHE IS AVAILABLE NOW

On July 27 at 4:57 p.m., we received a call about two dogs running at large in the intense summer heat.

Cher was one of them.

She was skinny. Her tail hung low. She looked tired—almost as though she were giving up. But she wasn’t alone. Her buddy Sonny was right there beside her.

Cher has been with us ever since. She has gained some much-needed weight, received plenty of love and gone on several outings. Yesterday, Megan decided this old girl deserved a little extra pampering. She needed to wait for a delivery at her son’s apartment, so she asked if Cher could come along and simply hang out.

What Megan learned tells us so much about who Cher was before she came to us.

Cher is perfectly housebroken. After a quick 10-minute potty walk, she didn’t need to go again until they were leaving. Inside the apartment, she waited to be invited into each room—and even waited for permission before getting onto the couch.

Once invited, she settled right in.

She enjoyed a non-rawhide chew, soaked up some affection and then curled up for a peaceful nap. When it was time to leave, she handled the stairwell beautifully. She politely passed people on the stairs, and when they encountered a cat, Cher either didn’t care or didn’t even notice.

Megan said, “I feel like somebody loved her very much because she is a really, really good dog.”

We believe that, too.

Cher already knows how to live in a home. She understands manners, respects boundaries and appears to be housebroken. She isn’t asking for much—just a comfortable place to nap, someone to love her and the security of knowing she will never again be wandering in the heat with her tail hanging low.

Cher is approximately 10 years old, weighs about 60 pounds and is ready for a home of her own.
