🎥 Just a little snippet from Rain or Shine: Socialization Field Trip on Saturday!

It was hot, so we took advantage of the creek by the covered bridge and gave the dogs a chance to cool off, explore, sniff, splash, play, and just be dogs together.

This class is about so much more than “dogs meeting dogs.” We’re practicing real-life socialization with as much choice and agency as possible — noticing what each dog is comfortable with, allowing breaks, supporting self-play, and helping them learn that being around other dogs can feel safe, fun, and relaxed.

Some dogs wanted to wade. Some wanted to play. Some wanted to sniff. Some wanted to hang near their people. All of those were good choices.

That’s the goal: not forced interaction, not chaos, not “everybody has to be best friends,” but thoughtful social experiences where dogs can build confidence at their own pace.

You know what's better than a rainy day at the dog park? A play date with friends at an indoor arena! Wonder Dogs first All Dog Social of June is today @ 4:30. We'll agility equipment up, as well as a fitness station, Proper greetings practice, and supervised play in our puppy station. Join us for a fun time with your four legged friends!

Quite possibly the best socialization video we’ve ever seen! It’s a dense topic, often done incorrectly, and misunderstood. But this is a GREAT overview!!

What would we change?

🐾 “go at your dogs pace” 👉yes, AND respect their choices. Let them choose and learn from their choices. It’s ok if they make mistakes. This prevents learned helplessness. You also support recovery and resiliency skills.

🐕 “human characteristics that cause problems” 👉 yes, AND let’s add:
-extra energetic or loud
-humans with wheels (bikes, wheelchairs, skateboards etc)
-small children, ESPECIALLY ages 1-5 years old.

🐶 “positive exposure using food or play” 👉 we see a lot of problem dogs that people tried to fix with food. It doesn’t always work!!! While the word “treats” is probably said five million times a day at Wonder Dogs, there are FIVE easy-to-use positive reinforcers: food, play, space, safety and choice.

We had the BEST time at OSU Pet Day this weekend 💛

One of the most special parts of the day? Seeing so many Wonder Dogs students out in a busy, exciting environment—and absolutely thriving. Dogs who once felt overwhelmed were moving through the crowd with confidence, checking in with their people, and showing off some truly lovely manners. And their humans… wow. Calm, supportive, and so in tune with their dogs. That’s the work. That’s what it’s all about.

We loved getting to connect with so many of you—whether you stopped by to say hi, ask questions, or grab a puppa-ccino (we went through a LOT 😄).

Huge thank you to Hailey and Adam for holding down the booth and having such thoughtful, helpful conversations with everyone who came by. And a special shoutout to Lily and Juno for being such wonderful ambassadors at the stand—you two made us proud 💫

Days like this remind us that training isn’t just about skills… it’s about building a life where you and your dog can feel good together, wherever you go.
