Meet Rutabaga, your dog's new best friend! 🐾

🌟 About Rutabaga (Ruti)

β€’ Breed: Uhh.. your guess is as good as ours!
β€’ Age: Born May 11, 2026 (approx. 5 months old)
β€’ Gender: Female (spayed)
β€’ Weight: 25 lbs (Fully grown weight estimated around 40–55 lbs)
β€’ Socialbility: Dogs rule!

πŸ• Appearance & Personality

If not for her wire hair, Ruti would look like a classic yellow lab mix. She's much leggier than her sister and almost an inch taller. And she has an adorable wave to the fur down her back.

πŸ’—
β€’ A Dog Person: Ruti's favorite person in her foster is the two year old mixed breed who she romps with. She is most confident when her dog friends show her that it is ok!
β€’ People are ok too, we guess: Likely due to a lack of early socialization, Rudi has a slower time getting used to new people. She trusts her dog friends to tell her when people are safe, and once she does lean in for affection, she really does enjoy it. It's just scary to take the first step!

πŸ’‘ Puppy Info (What to Expect)
β€’ Coat Care: While she is not as wiry as her sister, she still has some whiskers that might need trimming in adulthood.
β€’ Exercise & Brain Games: Puppies are natural explorers. If you don't provide the mental exercise for them, they might make their own. And you might not enjoy their puppy planned fun. Ruti LOVES to chew, so providing appropriate objects to chew on will be important.
β€’ Socialization: She would benefit from continued socialization to the world. Bonus if you have another dog to show her the way!
β€’ Training: While we are working on her basic manners and leash skills while she is in foster, her home should plan on continuing training. Puppies have a lot to learn about the world! (Yes, potty training will be an ongoing thing, she is just a baby still!)

🏑 Ideal Home
Rutabaga would do wonderfully in a home that can give her plenty of love, structure, and playtime. Bonus points if you have another dog who is looking for a little sibling

🐾 Rutabaga:
β€’ Fully vaccinated with her core vaccines (Rabies, DAPP, Bordetella)
β€’ Up to date on flea prevention
β€’ Spayed
β€’ Microchipped
β€’ Ready to go home today!

Meet Aubergine, the Wirehaired cutie searching for her forever home! 🐾

🌟 About Aubergine πŸ†

β€’ Breed: Uhh.. your guess is as good as ours!
β€’ Age: Born May 11, 2026 (approx. 6 months old)
β€’ Gender: Female (spayed)
β€’ Weight: 25 lbs (Fully grown weight estimated around 40–55 lbs)
β€’ Cuteness factor: off the charts!

πŸ• Appearance & Personality

Aubergine (Geni) is strikingly adorable! With one ear up and the other in a cute flop, she's always got maximum expression. Her fans love her sooty snoot. Even as a young'n she had some whisker growth, which adds to that cute factor.

This little girl has all sorts of love πŸ’—
β€’ For the people: Geni loves snuggling up to people and greets her foster mom first thing in the morning with kisses and cuddles. She is the first to greet new people too!
β€’ The other animal side: Being fostered with other dogs and cats, she's been able to meet a variety of critters. She prefers play partners who aren't too pushy right away as she can get overwhelmed. But she would love to make friends with the cat, much to his chagrin.

πŸ’‘ Puppy Info (What to Expect)
β€’ Coat Care: With a bit of wire in her coat, Aubergine might need some grooming care in the future. Using brushes and getting her used to baths early is a good first step!
β€’ Exercise & Brain Games: Puppies are natural explorers. If you don't provide the mental exercise for them, they might make their own. And you might not enjoy their puppy planned fun.
β€’ Socialization: Growing up in a shelter has Aubergine a little behind her peers. She would benefit from continued socialization to the world. Luckily she is incredibly food motivated and takes confidence from her handlers, so building your bond can make her more confident in the world with you at her side.
β€’ Training: While we are working on her basic manners and leash skills while she is in foster, her home should plan on continuing training. Puppies have a lot to learn about the world! (Yes, potty training will be an ongoing thing, she is just a baby still!)

Aubergine has been working very hard on her leash skills. I wouldn't say she's a pro, but she is certainly miles from where she was. Rutabaga is still working on being more comfortable on leash.

When the girls first arrived they had zero leash skills. They had no idea what was expected of them, and had a very strong opposition reflex. Which meant anytime the leash was tight there go to was backpedal and make it tighter. We've worked hard on pressure and release with them, and helping them figure out how this whole "going on walks" works.

Today the girls met a cat!

One of the most commonly asked questions when I'm adopting out dogs is whether or not that dog is good with [insert other animal, child, etc]. I find that to be a pretty difficult question to answer, because their behavior depends a lot on their environment and the interactions between the parties.

Cats are an excellent example. They are nuanced creatures who have their own thoughts and feelings about dogs, so how your cat reacts isn't going to be how every other cat reacts. Theo, the gray cat in the picture, is a rather easy going cat. He's incredibly dog savvy, and instead of running he will often jump on countertops or up a cat tree to get out of the way. Comparatively, my Calico is significantly more flighty. So when doing first introductions, I try to set puppies up for success and let them meet Theo (on his terms) first.

So when inquiring about the puppies: yes, they've met cats. I wouldn't say they are good with them because they are still babies, with poor impulse control, and are learning. But neither showed any intensity that makes me rule cats out.

Thankful for a job where I can bring the fosters to work! Aubergine and Rutabaga had a blast at Project POOCH today! The guys introduced them to walks in a new place with new people, practiced their sits and downs, and showed them that other humans are also GREAT at their ability to scritch the good places.

Both girls are available for adoption in Salem, OR.

Adoptable Aubergine is less and less undersocialized and more and more a sponge for love. She is the first to greet me every morning, and the first to come when I call them in from the yard. She is going to make someone an amazing best friend.
