Have you prepped your treat toys for this weekend yet? The next several days are likely to have loud scary booms, set up your dog for success with some frozen meals reserved just for the evenings.
Give your dogs their frozen meals right before you expect fireworks to start, and place them in their ‘safe zone’ with their music on. Make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times.
Consider fasting your dog in the morning or at least for their dinner. Many dogs won’t eat when stressed but fasting them and offering especially delicious food can help. Prep their meal with wet food, cooked (unseasoned) meats, raw food etc. in interactive toys like Kongs & West Paw Toppl’s. The yummier the better!
Create a safe space! Set up your dog’s crate in a central part of the house, away from windows. Close all windows & blinds to help block flashes of light and sounds. Use a sound machine, fan, tv, radio etc. to help drown out the noise.
Exercise in the mornings and early afternoon. A tired dog should be able to settle better than those with excess energy.
Leash up for potty walks. More dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day, so make sure your dog has their tags on and is leashed when you take them out to potty in the evenings. Ensure any fencing or gates are secure at all times.
