The CMN Memorial Garden

The CMNMG taps into the cultural legacy of gardening, cultivation, knowledge & care of the environment.

Telos Training, Inc.’s biggest project to date is The Charles Madison Nabrit Memorial Garden, which opened May, 2014, the 1st anniversary of his death. Yes, we were still very sad and a piece of our hearts indeed went with him, but his sons and wife wanted to commemorate his remarkable life and the lessons we learned rather than dwell on our loss. After a great deal of thought and prayerful consideration we decided to create The CMNMG, a sustainable, life affirming environment as the perfect, living example of his commitment to holistic (spiritual, intellectual and physical) health and well-being. And the garden is one more way to fight urban food deserts and create greater access to affordable whole, live, organic food. CMadison’s sons and nephews built the 38+ raised beds from 700 feet of untreated lumber, lined the beds with cardboard for organic weed control and then filled each of those beds with 8” of the 20 tons of organic soil. They designed and installed an above ground drip irrigation system and covered the 4 ft walkways between the beds with 20 tons of pea gravel. The garden is finished with 2 large composters, rain barrels, solar path lighting and perimeter fencing. The garden sits in a formerly fallow field behind the Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith, home of a 105+ year old congregation. Many of the congregants are 4th and 5th generation descendents of the original members and many more are descendents of participants of the great migration. The CMNMG taps into that cultural legacy of gardening, cultivation, knowledge and care of the environment. The garden also abuts a recreation center and a charter school so multi-generational learning happens in the garden and in community classes. During the harvest season we hold a weekly Farmer’s Market & Bake Sale where we sell all our organic goodness for $1.00lb. As he instructed, CMadison's entire body was donated to The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Division of Anatomy.

Hi! I know it's been a minute since I've posted anything about The CMN Memorial Garden at The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith (sorry!) And I also know this is the last minute (again, sorry!) But if you have time Saturday, July 25th, please meet me at the garden, 10:00-noon, for some much needed clean-up and maintenance.

Vacation Bible School starts Monday, Tanika Nicole Nabrit, my beautiful daughter-in-love, is in charge (as usual!) and Damon Princeton Penn Nabrit (as usual)will be helping. I'd like the garden space clear and organized i.e. safe, should they decide to use any of that space. (Yes, Telos Training, Inc., the 501(c)(3) that funds the garden maintains liability insurance, lestbthe church be exposed, but we've never had to file a claim and I don't want to start now!)

Also, the annual GCGC picnic is once again scheduled at our space, this year on Saturday, August 1st.

Bottom line, pllease let me know in the comments if you can join us so I can be sure and have enough snacks! Given the amount of work to do, we probably won't have time on Saturday to fire up the pizza oven, but I promise there will be food. And I also promise to have a pizza party later, for all those who help on Saturday. (Yes, Petty Paula will be making a list and checking it twice before passing out free pizza.)Thanks!😘

I love it when the campers and workers at The CMN Memorial Garden get recognized. And these pictures of children who are now teenagers, well, the fact that so many of our campers return to the garden every year, just makes me smile!

"Special thanks to Dr. Nathan Lee Roy Harris & See Brilliance for hosting Paula for a wonderful talk on the power of collective nourishment! 🍽️🤝

We had a fantastic time discussing how food—when grown, cooked, and shared together—acts as a bridge between our families and our communities. It was wonderful to see so many generations represented in such a robust and spirited dialogue!

How do you share food traditions in your family? Tell us in the comments! 👇"

I am so excited about this! Thanks to Dr. Nathan Lee Roy Harris
for the invitation to speak with parents about the holistic power of food cultivated, cooked, and consumed collectively, first within our families and then, expansively, within our communities.

Revolution, liberation, freedom, and holiness cannot survive, be sustained, or lived out loud on a diet dominated by fast food. And on the spiritual tip, (I'm 4th generation congregant at The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith...you know there's always a Bible verse🤣) please see 1 Corinthians 6:20 "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,..."

This does not just refer to s*x. Our bodies, our children's bodies, are temples. You don't fill a temple with junk food

Giving Tuesday runs from today, December 2nd, through December 9th. This week, we invite you to make a direct, tangible investment in the youth and community served by the Charles Madison Nabrit Memorial Garden.

Our garden is more than a green space; it's a living tribute to its namesake's legacy of education and community service. It is the cherished home of our STEM-to-STEAM: It's All in the Garden summer camp, which provides hands-on, high-quality science, art, and engineering education free of charge to local children. Thank you in advance, for your generosity!
