This weekend started the 2026 endurance season for Kinzie and I.

Last year we managed 128 trail riding miles, completing four rides (one intro and three LDs).

This year I am hoping to complete 100 miles across multiple AERC/OAATS events.

To help make sure we reach our goal I have registered us for the Virtual Tevis 😱 100 miles in 100 days….

If we complete the virtual race AND the various races I have planned for this year, KM and I will complete over 200 miles in 2026.

So keep your fingers crossed……

Finished our first endurance ride of the year 🙌

Since we’re starting the season with a new saddle (Freeform Treeless) we started light with an 11 mi intro ride. My girl was perfect. 😍 We had a blast, rode through the rain and passed all the vet checks.

We have some work to do before we’re ready for an LD this year, but we’re off to an excellent start 🩷

This ride even had food trucks 😱

To ease my paranoid brain my girl will be spending the night in a stall to make my poo-vestigation easier 🤣

Not sure how she managed it, but that is a massive wad of hay netting in Kinzie’s muzzle. Those aren’t plant roots dangling out either, that’s more netting.

I will freely admit that when it comes to my animals (especially my equines) I am a paranoid crazy person. So, when I got to the barn tonight and saw this I knew I needed to see her p**p. Didn’t matter that her behavior was normal and that she was eating and drinking fine.

First I just fed her, her soupy dinner and waited - nothing.
Then lunged her in the round pen for 30 min (that usually does the trick) - still nothing
Finally, I hooked up the trailer, loaded her up and went for a 30 min jaunt around Woodlawn/Stewart County - that got the job done

Good healthy p**p and a bright eyed mule…. So back out she went (without the muzzle).

Unfortunately, upon closer inspection there is netting in her p**p. It’s a small amount, but still. So looks like I’ll be a p**p investigator this weekend until I can confirm that there’s no netting left in her gut.

Keep your fingers crossed for clean p**p in the am 🤞🤞

Let’s talk about blanketing…….

I have always tried to be a “to each their own” when it comes to blanketing. Kinzie’s predecessor didn’t get blanketed for most of our time together. For him blanketing didn’t become a “thing” until his later years when he just couldn’t hold in his body heat like he used to to.

For KM she has been blanketed to some degree for the majority of our 8 years together. For her it started because I noticed she shivered when the temp was low and it rained. Now I do it as a preventative measure because I don’t see her every day.

After her pond fiasco I have started taking her temperature every time I see her and use that to help determine what blanket(s) would be best for the weather and her. I also use her ears as an indicator, warm ears equal warm mule, cold ears means cold mule. Mules run colder than horses, 97-100F vs 99-101F. So, when I took her temperature today (twice just to be sure) and she was at 97F I decided she needed more than “just” her 420g 🤦‍♀️. So, I added her Nights cooler to help warm her up.

Friday is projected to be in the 50s, so I’m gonna have to get creative tomorrow to keep her warm but also make sure she doesn’t overheat before I can get back out.

The struggle is real 🤦‍♀️😩
