Oscar's Rabbit Rescue, Inc. Is one of our biggest partners and to see them hurting right now is gutting.
Oscar's is right.....these are tragedies that can be prevented. There are too many folks out there who feel that neglect and abuse of animals is ok. What these rabbits experienced is nothing short of horrific. Innocent lives harmed. Human lives are not better or more important than animal lives.
I have never publicly shared my feelings like this before, but I hope the reality of this situation opens someone’s eyes. These fragile lives depend entirely on the choices we make for them.
If you think it’s easy or cheap, don’t get an animal. I guarantee you that it will be neither of these things.
The irresponsible decisions of one person have now led to 13 deaths over the last 4 days — and I fear the count is not over. Every day, I come home to another loss. Ages have been pre-term infants to around 5-6 weeks old.
Tonight, I am holding a tiny baby that is struggling to survive. I can feel its body weakening in my hands, and all I can do is sit here with a broken heart and tears running down my face, knowing there may be nothing left to save it. I expect this little one may be next.
And all I can ask is… why?
Why were rabbits put together without being spayed or neutered?
Why were they left outside? It’s so dangerous.
Why were they ignored and not taken care of? They still smell terrible from the terrible enclosure they had been in, and some will be urine stained for a while.
Why were pregnancies and babies ignored long enough that no one even noticed them until it was far too late?
Why did it take them several hours to catch them in 80 degree heat?
Why were they transported in excessively hot bins with barely any airflow?
These were not unavoidable tragedies. These were preventable losses caused by careless choices and complete disregard for life.
This family started with 3 rabbits that turned into 25 between 2 of them in 3 months. (That we know about)
People often see rabbits as “just rabbits,” but to me, they are living, feeling souls who deserved safety, care, and compassion. They deserved better than suffering like this.
Tonight my heart is shattered — for every life already lost, for every tiny body that fought so hard, and for every tear shed while trying desperately to save them.
