Meet Pratchett—a 7-year-old Smoke Tabby with a massive attitude and a legendary hatred of vet visits. Fun fact: he’s named after Sir Terry Pratchett because his mom is completely obsessed with the Discworld series. Much like a character from one of his books, Pratchett firmly believes he rules the universe (and that our staff merely exists to serve him).

But recently, his universe hit a snag. He came home limping, completely unable to jump onto his favorite couch.

Our own Dr. Amy Bertelli diagnosed severe arthritis and a torn cruciate ligament. Knowing Pratchett would rather swallow hot coals than a daily pill, she knew standard treatment wouldn't work. She immediately referred him to the brilliant team at Jewel Veterinary Surgery for a specialized tag-team approach:

Have you ever caught one of our amazing team members out in their "civilian clothes" out in the wild?! 🕵️‍♂️✨

If you were near the Asheville VA nursing home recently, you might have spotted a very familiar face trading in her stethoscope for... a ukulele! 🎶🎵 Dr. Hawkins was out in the community bringing smiles, music, and some serious joy to the wonderful veterans and their families. ❤️🎸

But she’s not the only one! When our team takes off their scrubs, they don't stop caring. The wild world of our local community is packed with our staff making a real difference:

🐶 Fostering fur-babies for our amazing local animal rescues to help them find forever homes.

🤝 Running a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to get vital relief and support to post-Helene victims right here in our mountains. 🏔️❤️

🚨 Serving as volunteer first responders, stepping up to protect and care for our neighbors at a moment's notice.

We are so incredibly proud to have a team that pours so much love back into Western North Carolina, both inside the clinic and out! 🌲✨

🐾 Big news from our amazing friends over at Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation! 🐶🐱

They have just launched an incredible new capital campaign called "Tails of Tomorrow" to give their facility a massive upgrade, and they need our help to cross the finish line! 🏁

They’ve already raised a whopping $1 million to officially buy their building, but now they are working hard to secure $2.2 million for some much-needed renovations. We are talking major upgrades for the fur babies, including:

🐕 Indoor-outdoor runs for the dogs so they can stretch their legs!

🐈 Luxury vertical condos for the cats to climb and lounge in style!

🧼 Essential facility upgrades like proper floor drains and hose fixtures to keep everything sparkling clean.

They are doing so much good work for animals in Haywood County and Western North Carolina, and these renovations will help them save even more lives! ❤️

🐾 Patient Spotlight: Ben’s Big Win & The Truth About Dental Health! 🐾

We love a happy ending, especially when it comes with a side of excellent news! Meet Ben, who recently came in for a post-operative recheck after having two troublesome teeth (108 and 311) extracted.

Not only is Ben back to his happy, wiggly, normal self, but his recent biopsy results came back with the best news possible: completely benign! 🎉 It turns out his dental issues were causing some major inflammation and infection, but absolutely no signs of cancer. His facial swelling is officially a thing of the past!

Ben was such a brave boy that he even caught up on his wellness vaccines while he was here. Talk about a productive vet visit!

🥜🍪 POST-OP UPDATE: 🍪🥜

The patients did great during their spay surgeries on Tuesday… but unfortunately their owners made one critical mistake:

They brought peanut butter cookies for the staff.

As you can see, our medical team immediately entered a highly coordinated feeding frenzy. Honestly, the dogs recovered faster than our self-control did. 😅

In our defense, we work very hard.
In the cookies’ defense, they were delicious.
In the dogs’ defense, they are probably wondering why they didn’t get snacks after surgery too.

A huge thank you to our sweet clients for keeping the East Asheville Family Vet team fueled with caffeine, carbs, and emotional support baked goods. 💙🐾

🌌🦷 A disturbance in the Force has been detected at East Asheville Family Vet… 🦷🌌

After careful investigation, we have determined that today’s patient was escorted to their dental procedure by an actual Ewok from the forest moon of Endor. Frankly, we have no further questions. 👀🐻

This tiny rebel fighter checked in for a COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment), because even in a galaxy far, far away… dental disease is still the enemy. 😔✨

Our brave patient faced:
⭐ A full oral exam
⭐ Dental radiographs
⭐ Professional cleaning
⭐ The terrifying possibility of being perceived with bad breath

Meanwhile, their Ewok handler stood by to ensure the mission stayed on target.

Remember, pets are experts at hiding dental discomfort, so signs of trouble can be subtle:
⚠️ Bad breath strong enough to stun a Stormtrooper
⚠️ Tartar buildup
⚠️ Red gums
⚠️ Difficulty chewing
⚠️ General “I find your lack of dental care disturbing” energy
