Everyone says they want a smart dog.

Until that smart dog starts opening doors, figuring out your routines, finding loopholes in your rules, and creating its own entertainment when it’s bored.

Intelligence is a great trait, but living with a highly intelligent dog isn’t always easy. Smart dogs need structure, training, boundaries, and an outlet for their minds. Without it, they’ll find their own job, and chances are you won’t like what they choose.

Before choosing a dog based on intelligence alone, make sure you’re ready for everything that comes with it.

3 things I don’t allow my personal dogs to do as a professional dog trainer.

1. Turn the house into a playground

No running laps through the house, wrestling in the living room, or chaos indoors. Inside the home is where my dogs learn how to relax, settle, and coexist calmly with the family.

2. Get on furniture without permission

My dogs don’t automatically own the couch or the bed. Boundaries matter. If I invite them up, that’s one thing. But entitlement creates bad habits fast.

3. Beg at the table

No staring, whining, pawing, or hovering while we eat. That behavior might seem harmless when they’re puppies, but it becomes annoying real quick once they’re grown.

A lot of people confuse structure with being “strict.”

In reality, structure creates clarity.
Clarity creates confidence.
And confident dogs get more freedom in the real world.

Calm dogs are built, not born.

Life gets busy. Work, kids, errands, responsibilities. I get it.

That does not mean your dog’s training has to stop.

Some of the most valuable training moments happen in the little everyday things. Asking for a place command while you cook dinner. Having your dog hold a down while the kids run around. Practicing thresholds before going outside. A few minutes here and there adds up fast.

Training is not just about dedicated sessions. It is about building habits, structure, and engagement into everyday life.

A well trained dog is built through consistency, not perfection.

A lot of dogs can hold place in a quiet environment.

The real test is whether they can stay calm, accountable, and clear headed around heavy distractions.

This puppy is only 6 months old and already learning how to ignore distractions, stay engaged, and make good decisions even when excitement is happening around him.

That is the kind of obedience that creates real freedom later on.

I offered $20 to any stranger at the park that could make Bella break her down command.

Kids running around.
Dogs everywhere.
People walking by.
Public event chaos.

Bella didn’t move.

This is the difference between obedience at home and obedience in the real world.

Obedience equals freedom.

Thresholds are about a lot more than manners.

Doors, gates, crates, and car doors are all chances to teach patience and self control instead of impulsive behavior.

Structure creates freedom.

If your dog drags you through doors, ignores commands, or has zero structure, we can help. Message Obedient Companions K9 Training to get started.

Most people think PLACE is just teaching a dog to lay down on a bed.

It’s way more than that.

PLACE teaches patience, impulse control, calmness, and accountability. It gives your dog a clear job and helps create structure inside the home and out in public.

A dog that understands PLACE is usually a dog that’s easier to live with.

Structure creates freedom.
