Sharing this from Dixie Girl Dog Rescue because it matters and not enough people ask these questions before handing their dog over to a stranger.

Choosing a trainer is one of the most consequential decisions you'll make for your dog. The wrong fit doesn't just slow progress, it can cause real harm.

The checklist in this post is solid and we encourage everyone to read it and use it, making sure to the hard questions of any trainer, including us.

A trainer who does this work well will welcome your scrutiny. Transparency isn't a threat to someone who has nothing to hide.

Your dog is counting on you to get this right.

🎯🐾 Know Your Trainer 🐾🎯

Choosing a dog trainer is a big decision and not all trainers are created equal. The wrong one can set your dog back… or worse. Before you trust someone with your dog, do your homework.

Here’s what to look for:
🔍 Google them. Look beyond their website- check reviews, news, and public records.
🔍 Check for arrests or complaints. It’s uncomfortable, but it matters.
🔍 Ask for references. A good trainer should gladly provide them.
🔍 Ask if they’ve worked with rescues or shelters. This often means they’ve handled a wide range of dogs and behaviors.
🔍 Ask a hard question: “Is there anyone who wouldn’t recommend you AND why?”
🔍 Understand their training style. Do they promise quick fixes, or do they set realistic expectations?

Big Red Flags:
🚩 Guarantees or “instant results”
🚩 Lack of transparency
🚩 Refusal to let you observe or be involved
🚩 Heavy push toward board & train without clear reasoning

Let’s talk about Board & Train:
There are situations where it can be helpful, but it should never be a one-size-fits-all solution. If a trainer recommends board & train for every issue, that’s a red flag.

Dogs learn best with their owners. Training should include you, not remove you.

💔 The reality is hard: dogs have been injured and even died in the wrong training environments. MULTIPLE AL-based trainers have been arrested for animal cruelty. This is why doing your research matters.

💛 Your dog trusts you to keep them safe. Choose someone who respects that trust.

Less worry, less advice, more living.

Have you noticed how saturated the dog world is with „do this, don’t do that“? It often leads to nothing but overthinking and endless worry.

My take? Let’s worry less and tune out the unsolicited noise. Unless you are intentionally seeking private professional guidance from someone you trust, hold onto your own intuition.

Take social media self-presentation with a grain of salt and shift your focus back to what truly matters: enjoying your life with your dog.

This may not be easily achievable with every dog, but celebrate your wins and be proud of them.

Das ist Hamlet.
Als wir zum ersten Mal von ihm hörten, war seine Besitzerin mit den Nerven am Ende.
Er ging auf Hunde los, sprang Menschen an und hat sogar mehrere Menschen gebissen.
Das Leben wurde für beide immer kleiner.

Jetzt ist Hamlet bei uns im Trainingscamp in Kansas City – um sein Mindset zu verändern, eine Basis für Verhaltensänderung zu schaffen und das Vertrauen zurückzugewinnen, das beide als Team verloren hatten.

Begleite uns auf seiner Reise, lerne seine Persönlichkeit kennen und sieh, wie wir Hamlet und seiner Besitzerin helfen, mit unserer weiteren Unterstützung Stück für Stück mehr Freiheit zurückzugewinnen.

This is Hamlet.
When we first heard about him, his owner was at her wits’ end.
He went after dogs, lunged at people, even delivering bites to several people.
Life kept getting smaller for both of them.

Hamlet’s now staying with us for a Board & Train in Kansas City — to help change his mindset, build a foundation for behavioral change, and rebuild the trust they’ve both lost as a team.

Follow along to see his journey, and how we’re helping him and his owner gain back more freedom with our continued support.
