Puppies love to explore the world!

But… sometimes that world offers too many choices. Having too many choices for a young puppy is often where trouble starts.

Good household management such as making use of crates, puppy pens, baby gates and puppy proofed quiet spaces is not just a recommendation:

It is essential to ensuring your puppy remains safe (no emergency vet visits!)

It is essential to ensuring your belongings and home stays safe (no loss of precious items or expensive repair bills!)

It is essential to ensuring your puppy has the opportunity to get in their 18 hours per day good quality sleep (no crabby toddler syndrome!)

None of us have eyes in the back of our heads and few of us have the ability to supervise a puppy 24/7. This is especially true for busy households.

Start your puppy right by considering what household management you will need and plan how you will do this. Ideally, before puppy comes home!

Puppy’s come with a long list of accessories!

A few things to buy before puppy comes home:

🐾Collar and lead (remember they are going to grow, and quickly)
🐾Beds (do not spend a fortune on expensive beds just now, they are shred hazard at this stage!)
🐾Crates (you can always buy a full size one that comes with a divider so the space is not big for your puppy and can be adjusted as they grow)
🐾Pens (trust me, you will want this in your toolkit, even if you don’t think you need one!)
🐾Baby gates (as above, really helpful for controlling access in the house to just puppy proofed areas!)
🐾Blankets (plenty, and again, not expensive- they are a chew risk right now!)
🐾Enzymatic cleaner (for those toileting accidents)
🐾A large variety of appropriate chews- chew toys and natural/ edible chews to rotate
🐾A variety of different toys for you and your puppy to play together with
🐾Some enrichment items (snuffle mat, lickimat, kong etc)
🐾Good quality puppy training rewards so you can get your practice in from day one!

Adding oomph to your stop whistle.

Our pet gundogs are focusing on adding some oomph to their stop whistle this term.

Stop whistle is punishing to our dogs, even when you didn't mean it to be. The outcome is always to stop doing something they are enjoying.

Making your stop whistle functional by using the functional rewards of hunting and retrieving can greatly increase your dogs motivation.
