This little squirrel kit was incredibly lucky to be discovered by a kind finder in Aboyne. Underweight and bleeding from his nose, the youngster had clearly become separated from his mother and was in urgent need of care.

Thankfully, he is now three days into his recovery, doing much better and gaining weight rapidly. However, when feeding time comes around, he is often still fast asleep...

Don't forget to book your place for our squirrel workshop as part of the North East Scotland Biodiversity Partnership - NESBiP’s Aberdeen City BioBlitz at The James Hutton Institute this Friday 2:00pm - 3:30pm.

Come along if you want to pick up some ID tips, learn about our monitoring methods and find out the best places to spot red squirrels in the city. All ages welcome, no experience necessary! We’ve received a couple of new grey squirrel sightings in recent days from private gardens around Mannofield and Springbank Cemetery.

Based on the locations and timing, we believe these sightings are likely to involve the same individual previously reported in the Woodies, near the Robert Gordon University area, and in Garthdee during July (pictured).

This kind of movement is exactly what we would expect in a low-density population. With very few grey squirrels present in the area, individuals may range more widely in search of a breeding partner. As a result, the same squirrel may be seen in several different locations over time.

Every sighting is extremely important. 🐿️

If this individual continues to move around the area, your reports will help us track its movements and increase our chances of locating it again.

Please continue to report any grey squirrel sightings, including the location, date and time, and any photographs if possible.
