😉 WELCOME TO ADOLESCENCE 😉

Has your lovely puppy suddenly been replaced by a small furry hooligan? - Welcome to what we call adolescence 🐶

Suddenly… Recall has disappeared, everything smells more interesting than you, other dogs are VERY exciting, loose lead walking appears to have been deleted from the system and things they've seen 100 times are suddenly suspicious, sound familiar? 😬

You are probably finding yourself saying sentences such as "But they USED to be so good!” - Don't worry, you aren't alone.

Adolescence can be a challenging stage, but your dog hasn't suddenly become bad! Their brain and body are going through huge developmental changes. This is the time to go back to your basic training.

I mean the behaviour that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else but is completely normal in your house.

Do they have to spin three times before lying down?

💜 HOW HAVE YOU ALL BEEN COPING IN THE STORM? 💜

We managed to get the girls out for a walk this morning before the wind really picked up, although poor Lottie, being as small as she is, still had a rather interesting hairdo by the time we’d finished!

One thing Lottie has always done when she’s picked up in the wind is start swimming in mid-air! Now, Lottie absolutely LOVES being carried and held, but interestingly, she only does these little swimming movements when it’s windy!

Although we don’t know exactly why some dogs do this, it’s possible that the sensation of the wind against their body contributes to these automatic paddling movements.

It’s something she’s done for years, and it never fails to make us laugh! 😂

I have attached a video just for cuteness! 🥹

💜 WHY YOUR WALK WAS HARDER TODAY 💜

“But yesterday they walked past that dog and they were absolutely fine!” - this is something I hear frequently while working with clients.

Progress with behaviour isn't perfectly linear, your dog isn't a robot who starts every morning with exactly the same capacity to cope.

Their ability to cope comes down to so many different factors -
💜 Maybe they didn't sleep particularly well.
💜 Maybe there was building work outside.
💜 Maybe they had visitors.
💜 Maybe they already saw three dogs on their walk.
💜 Maybe something frightened them earlier.
💜 Maybe they're uncomfortable.
💜 Maybe today's environment is simply harder.

All of those little experiences can stack on top of each other.

A situation your dog coped brilliantly with yesterday might be too much today, this doesn't mean your training has stopped working, it doesn't mean you're back at square one and it definitely doesn't mean your dog is deliberately being difficult.

Respond to the dog you've got in front of you TODAY. Create more distance, lower the difficulty, give them a break. Then try again another day 🐾

Progress isn't about never having another difficult day.

It's about gradually giving your dog more tools to cope when those difficult days happen 🥰

🧡 WELCOME NEW PUPS 🧡

Say hello to the newest (and cutest!) students who started their Puppy Classes this week!

The first class can often be a bit daunting for both pups and humans, so we keep it nice and simple with some food games, fun tasks and plenty of time to take in their new surroundings.

I can't wait to see the progress they all make in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for more puppy content! 🐶

👀 LETS HEAR YOUR CONFESSIONS AS A DOG GUARDIAN 👀

It's Friday, so we're having a confession session 😂
Finish this sentence: “My dog has trained ME to __________.”

I'll start…
Maxine has well and truly trained us to sleep uncomfortably and fold our bodies in ways they shouldn't fold as humans at bed time. At bed time, she will make herself dead weight so we need to sleep around her 😴
Lottie has up trained to ensure we stand out in the freezing cold weather in the middle of our dinner as she decides this is the appropriate time to go to the toilet, despite our best efforts of trying to take her for a toilet break before dinner... 👀

Let's be honest, we spend all this time talking about training our dogs while they're quietly running an extremely successful human training programme! It's their world, we just have the honour of living in it 😅

Does yours stare at you until you move out of THEIR seat? Bring you a toy because they've decided it's playtime? Stand beside the treat cupboard and somehow convince you they haven't eaten in approximately six weeks? Demand their bedtime routine at precisely the same time every night?

💜 FINAL ADOLESCENT BLOCK OF 2026 💜

I cannot believe I'm posting the final adolescent block of 2026! What an incredible year it's been for our adolescent classes! 🐾

These classes are designed to help you navigate that tricky teenage phase, understand your dog's behaviour and develop practical, real-life skills that you can continue working on outside of the class environment.

From recall and loose lead walking to managing distractions, building engagement, practising emergency stops and so much more - we're here to help you and your adolescent dog work together!

🐕 Suitable for dogs aged 6–24 months
📆 Starting Wednesday 18th November at 6:15pm

🎆 FIREWORK PREP 🎆

If your dog struggles with fireworks, PLEASE don't wait until Bonfire Night to start thinking about it. There are things we can start doing NOW to make those evenings a little easier.

💜 Create a safe space your dog can choose to retreat to.
💜 Start using it now so it already has positive associations before fireworks begin.
💜 Check that microchip details are up to date.
💜 Plan walks earlier in the day where possible.
💜 Close curtains and blinds before it gets dark.
💜 Use background noise to help mask sudden bangs.
💜 Have long-lasting chews, lick mats or enrichment ready IF your dog finds food helpful when they're worried.

And most importantly… You absolutely CAN comfort your dog 🫂
You aren't going to “reinforce fear” by reassuring a frightened dog, if your dog seeks you out when they're scared, it's absolutely okay to be there for them.

If your dog has a history of noise phobia, now is also the time to speak to your vet rather than waiting until fireworks are already happening. Preparation won't make every frightened dog suddenly comfortable with fireworks, but we can make sure they feel as safe and supported as possible 🥰
