Conversation I'm having with a producer interested in beef, about the economics between beef and sheep. AI tells me : It takes about 5 to 7 years of productive life (or roughly 7 to 9 years from birth) for a beef replacement heifer to fully pay back her raising and maintenance costs, though efficient or low-cost operations can achieve a breakeven timeline in about 5 years. What are the thoughts about this?

Going through the 90 purebred Rideau ram lambs that we need to select from for next year.
This is an important part of managing our closed flock. We’re carefully selecting lambs to maintain our 8 family lines, keep inbreeding coefficients low, and continue building and maintaining the flock’s natural parasite resistance.
A lot of thought and planning goes into choosing the next generation of our breeding stock!

Investing in a good scale, reader and handling equipment will pay dividends. These tools allow you to easily weigh lambs with little effort regularly and identify any individuals in a large group that may require extra attention that may easily go unnoticed.

300 ewes grazing this field for the third time this season. This paddock was rejuvenated 12 years ago and seems to get better each year.
We has been using the Gallagher fencing rotational grazing system since 1984. We follow a 30-day pasture rest period, allowing the forage to recover before the sheep return.
Over more than four decades, this has proven to be a very good investment, improving pasture productivity, supporting healthier soils, and providing high-quality grazing year after year and lowering our cost of production.

I like Reed Canary Grass, we incorporate it in all our pasture fields and also include it in our hay fields, and our whole farm is tiled drained. Sheep like the leave's and if sheep like it I like it. But it takes work and can easily get a head of you. Thats where strip grazing management is important.
