When people ask about the cost of my puppies, I often try to explain this actually hits it right on. My price had been the same for years and is actually below average. So for the people who say we do it just for the money they couldn't be more wrong.
A well-bred purebred Border Collie costs more than just the purchase price because responsible breeders invest heavily in the health, temperament, and long-term quality of their dogs.
Here's what goes into the cost:
Health testing – Breeding dogs are screened for inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia, and DNA-tested for genetic disorders common in Border Collies. These tests can cost thousands of dollars.
Quality breeding stock – Proven breeding dogs with excellent health, temperament, and working or sport pedigrees are expensive to purchase and maintain.
Prenatal and veterinary care – Pregnancy checkups, ultrasounds, emergency care if needed, and whelping supplies all add significant expense.
Raising the litter – Puppies receive high-quality food, deworming, vaccinations, microchips (if provided), veterinary examinations, and registration paperwork.
Early socialization – Good breeders spend weeks handling, exposing, and training puppies so they develop into confident companions.
Registration and guarantees – Registration, health records, contracts, and breeder support after the puppy goes home are all part of the cost.
Small or unsuccessful litters – Not every breeding results in a large, healthy litter, so breeders often absorb substantial costs.
In Ontario, a well-bred, health-tested purebred Border Collie typically costs about CAD $2,000–$3,500, with exceptional working or sport bloodlines sometimes priced even higher.
A much lower price (for example, under $1,000) often means the breeder may not be performing all recommended health testing or investing the same level of care in the breeding program.
For someone looking for a healthy, well-socialized family companion or performance dog, paying more upfront from a reputable breeder often reduces the risk of expensive health and behavioral problems later.
