Our mission

Founded in 2012 Save Me Rescue, located in Southern Ontario, is one of many non-profit organizations dedicated to rescuing abandoned or otherwise homeless animals, (primarily dogs) from high-kill shelters predominantly around Canada and the United States. Additionally, Save Me Rescue focuses our efforts on providing foster homes for dogs whose owners are no longer able to care for them, in order to place them in the care of individually chosen families with whom they can bond and grow with in years to come. By effectively connecting and working alongside impossibly committed volunteers, dedicated foster homes, local veterinarians, diligent trainers and boarding facilities, Save Me is able to rescue, rehabilitate and relocate a large number of animals every year. Providing incoming animals with much-needed loving temporary care until we are able to find them carefully screened, well-matched forever homes is simply our pleasure. Formed after recognizing a need for an organization which specialized on the medical health and behavioural well-being of the dogs they rescued, Save Me also found an absence of support for the families behind their adoptions. This includes both the families surrendering dogs who often have no other choice but to turn to shelters or rescue groups for help, by ensuring that they feel supported in their decisions and reassuring them that their loved ones will be cared for in every sense of the word, and keeping in touch with the families who we have been lucky enough to meet through the adoption of one of our foster dogs. To further prevent this issue from occurring, Save Me Rescue decided very early on to also serve as a resource to communities and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spaying and/or neutering your pet, positive behavior training, and proper nutrition.

Breta - Available for Adoption

Havanese - Female - 8.8 lbs - 6 (approx)

Spayed/Vaccines UTD/Microchipped
Foster Location: Mississauga, ON

Sponsored by Angela Johnson – in memory of my foxhound Lucy who recently passed

Meet Breta 🐾 — A Happy Little Girl with a Big Heart!

At just 8 lbs, 6 year old Breta is a tiny Havanese with a whole new world waiting to be discovered! This sweet girl is a former puppy mill mama who is learning how wonderful life is. These days, she’s discovering the joys of being a cherished family dog, and it’s been fun watching her personality blossom. ❤️

Breta is fully vetted, spayed, and has recently had a dental with extractions. She’s ready to find a family who will continue to show her just how wonderful life can be.

Breta can be shy when meeting new people, but her curiosity is growing! She likes to watch from a short distance before slowly making her way over to investigate and sniff alongside her foster brothers. She has recently started letting out a few barks when people come into the home just to alert you someone is there. Sudden movements can still startle her, so she appreciates a calm, patient approach and the freedom to build trust at her own pace.

This sweet girl has already come so far! When her foster family comes home, Breta is there to greet them at the door excited with a happy, wagging tail. 🥹❤️ She also loves following her foster mom around the house, quietly keeping her company as she goes about her day.

Breta loves being near her people, although she isn’t quite the snuggly lap dog you might expect. She’s happiest hanging out nearby, keeping an eye on her favourite humans. At bedtime, she happily settles on her own dog bed beside her foster parents’ bed, but she’s recently discovered the joys of the human bed and loves being close to her pack!

She is not use to being picked up and can become very squirmy when lifted. Her future family will need to respect her boundaries and allow her to feel safe without being handled unnecessarily.

Breta is living with two senior foster brothers and has done well with other dogs she’s met. She enjoys having canine company and would likely appreciate a home where introductions to other dogs are thoughtful and respectful.

When she’s feeling happy and playful, she enjoys her toys and loves a good case of the zoomies in the yard. Oh and if you leave your socks on the floor she might run away with one too! One of her absolute favourite things? WALKS!Just bring out the leash and watch her excitement grow. She even lets out a few barks to show her excitement. Breta loves getting out for walks and does a great job taking care of her business while she’s out and about.

Breta is not crate trained and does not enjoy being crated. The good news is that she doesn’t need one. Her foster family gives her free rein of the house when they go out, and she does well alongside her two foster brothers.

She has been left alone once without the other dogs and was vocal, so we don’t yet know how she would manage as the only dog in the home or when left completely alone. A family willing to continue learning about her needs and help her feel secure will be important.

Breta knows how to do her business outside and has done very well with the consistent schedule her foster family has established. Her new family will need to maintain that routine to help her continue succeeding.

She’s also still figuring out the stairs inside her foster home. She manages the few steps leading in and out of the house but hasn’t quite mastered the indoor stairs yet. She’ll attempt to go up before changing her mind and coming back down. With patience, encouragement, and time, she can continue building her confidence.

Breta currently lives with small children and is gentle with them. However, sudden movements can startle her. A home with dog-savvy children who understand how to respect a dog’s space could be a good fit.

Breta is looking for a patient loving family to show her how wonderful the world around her is. She needs someone who will celebrate the little victories, respect her boundaries, keep her routine consistent, and let her discover the world at her own pace.

She may be tiny, and she may still have a few things to figure out, but Breta is already showing us that there is so much joy left for her to experience.

Eddie - Available for Adoption

Chihuahua - Male - 8lbs - 2 (approx)

Neutered/Vaccines UTD/Microchipped
Foster Location: Elmira, ON

Sponsored by Lynda Gallagher – in memory of Mike

Meet Eddie....but really, he should be called "happy". His tail never stops wagging.

He came into foster frozen in fear, but his tail was always wagging. He wanted to be friends but was so very scared. He was given time and space, after a few days he came around. He is still very skittish, but has become an active little thing, full of personality. Your shoes? They will magically move around the house. Your socks? One will just show up on his pillow. He likes to find little treasures and move them to his pillow when you aren't looking. He is a bit mischievous and has a wicked side eye. He is a goofy little thing, hasn't shown any grumpy chi side of him yet. So far he is just a big goof and full of energy running around the house. He loves getting attention, will even let you rub his belly.

He still runs away to his "safe" spot when people are walking around but he waits for you there to pet him or pick him up. He has gotten brave enough to follow the humans around the house. But don't look at him or he runs back. It has become a game for him. He is getting braver and braver, eventually he will get more confident and comfortable.

He will do his business when he gets taken outside. If you miss the window, he Will gladly go in the house. He knows what to do outside, just not that he is meant to ask to go out.

He hasn't gone on walks out in public yet, it would probably be too overwhelming for him just yet. We don't want him to get spooked. He is starting to get comfortable exploring the far corners of the yard. He is so happy to get attention that he will bounce back to the house when called. For now. Once he gets really comfortable in his new house his listening skills may stop working. He is a Chihuahua after all. They tend to do as they wish.

We currently haven't experienced any food or resource guarding issues. He is just so happy to be here he isn't really bothered by anything.

He didn't bark for the longest time but then finally found the courage to test out his voice. He hasn't barked very much, only when a visitor has come into the house and he isn't sure.

His foster house has a big husky mix, and Eddie isn't the slightest bit bothered... aside from one play time incident when the husky thought Eddie might enjoy a game of chase (he found that a bit overwhelming... he prefers slower paced fun play).

He has found the back of the couch to be a perfect spot for him watch the world and curl up for a nap. He will eventually be a lap dog once he has some time to really settle and bond with his people.

He is a sweetheart and would make a great friend for most families. Being that he is only 8lbs, he would do best in a home with older kids. He is more of a lap dog, not ideal if you are looking for a dog park, ball chasing family dog.

He is a squirmy, wiggly, happy little bundle of silly. He has really started to figure out the comforts of life in a house and is kind of enjoying it. He would love to curl up on the couch in front of the fireplace with you.

10/22/2026

Our quest to help Dolly continued yesterday with a consultation and surgery with orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Justin Levy at Thornbury Animal Hospital. Dolly’s spinal fractures have resulted in a number of significant problems. Today’s surgery focused on straightening and properly aligning the hind leg that has shown good improvement with her ongoing treatment.

Dr. Levy Thornbury Veterinary Hospital carefully placed an external fixation device, secured with internal pins and screws. The device will remain in place for approximately 6–8 weeks. During this time, Dolly will return to Dr. Levy for regular bandage changes and adjustments to the external bands. If all goes well, the next step will be a second surgery to correct a severe luxating patella. Her knee is so badly displaced that it was initially difficult to locate.

Over the past several weeks, Dolly has been receiving physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, along with exercises at home. These efforts have helped her improving leg become stronger and continue to progress. Unfortunately, there has been very little change in her other hind leg.

While Dolly was under anaesthesia today, Dr. Levy attempted to flex the joints in that leg but was unable to do so. It remains completely rigid. With each passing day, the likelihood of achieving meaningful improvement in that leg becomes smaller, and we have to be realistic about what may be possible.

Considering the condition Dolly was in when she first came to us, we will be very happy if we can achieve good function in one hind leg. We know how well dogs can adapt and live happy, active lives on three strong legs.

Dolly is a very smart and determined little girl. She has already come a long way, and we will continue to do everything we can to give her every opportunity to thrive and enjoy the best quality of life possible. Our gratitude to her foster mom, Colleen is immeasurable. Caring for Dolly is quite an undertaking and she could not be in better hands.

Thank you to everyone who has so generously donated towards Dolly’s medical care. She still has a long road ahead, and we are incredibly grateful for every contribution that helps us continue her treatment.

If you would like to help us help Dolly, donations can be sent by e-transfer or PayPal to [email protected]. As a registered Canadian charity, we are pleased to issue tax receipts for donations of $20 or more.

Thank you for standing with Dolly as we continue to do everything possible to get her standing, and running, and having the life she deserves. ❤

Annie - no longer accepting applications

Lhasa Apso - Female - 17.6 pounds - 6 years (approx)

Spayed/Vaccines UTD/Microchipped
Foster Location: New Dundee, ON

Sponsored by Monica Musil in loving memory of Milo

Miss Annie arrived into Canada on October 3rd, from a Mill in Ohio. This little lady is a wonderful cuddly companion once she is given time to warm up. It is quite common with Mill dogs that they have not been exposed to anything outside of their pen. Annie is no exception and is learning how to be a dog from her foster siblings. Annie has learned how to climb up and down stairs, she no longer runs when strange noises are heard in her home, she knows she is to do her bathroom business outside (Annie is still a work in progress, if you miss her que, she goes indoors), and adores sleeping cuddled in a bed.
Annie is a great eater, all things not kibble! She now gently will take a treat from your hand and quietly waits her turn when it is treat time for everyone. Annie lives in a busy household, ignores the resident cats and is understanding a few commands like come and stay. Annie is a pretty quiet girl, barks randomly and cannot figure out where the barking is coming from when she hears it on TV. This little girl very happily goes for a walk every day, but hasn't figured out this is a time for bathroom business and the joy of sniffing where other dogs have been. She seems very frightened by large dogs barking, only heard from a distance.
Annie Bananie is a loving dog who greats us when a wagging tail while dancing on her hind legs! She is micro-chipped, spayed and up to date on all vaccines. Annie is a trusting soul who looks through you with those big brown eyes, everyone instantly falls in love! Annie sleeps through the night, is a willing companion for any car ride, and is also pretty happy just lounging on the couch. An adopter must be willing to continue with a patient approach, and will be awarded ten-fold with this amazing Lhasa Apso.

Cricket - Available for Adoption

Terrier mix - Female - 20 lbs - 2 years (approx)

Spayed/Vaccines UTD/Microchipped
Foster Location: Etobicoke, ON

Sponsored by Heather Baggs in loving memory of Mike Stein with heartfelt condolences to Lynda on her great loss.

If you’re looking for a dog who can keep up with you on long walks and then curl up beside you on the couch for a long nap, Cricket may be your girl. Energetic yet affectionate, she loves being active with her people just as much as she loves snuggling with them.

Cricket is a slim and trim 20-pound terrier cross, perhaps with a little Beagle in the mix and a splash of Jack Russell. You would be excused for thinking she is part goat given her ability to leap up on things much higher than herself, seemingly with little effort.

Because of her energy level, she’ll need a home where she gets plenty of exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation. A securely fenced yard where she can run, play, and burn off some of her energy is essential.

Despite her energy level, she is a true cuddler and will insist on joining you in your chair and climbing into bed with you at night. Make room.

Cricket is spayed, microchipped, up to date on her vaccinations, and house-trained.

She is very good on leash and is not reactive to people, dogs, or bikes. A passing squirrel, however, can get her attention pretty quickly.

Cricket is great with other dogs and would prefer a home with another playful dog, or one where she has regular opportunities to play with canine friends.

She still has a few manners to work on, as do many dogs her age, but a little patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are all she needs.

Rat Terrier Mix - Female - 23 lbs - 4 yrs (approx)

Spayed/Vaccines UTD/Microchipped
Foster Location: London, ON

Sponsored by Maanya and Raj

Raj
Tilly seems to get overlooked a lot, and we get it. A lot of people like the scruffies, fluffies and the hypos but boy are they missing out. This girl is up for hiking, strolls in the park and also happy to cozy up for movie night.
Tilly is a snuggler. Her favourite place to be is up on a lap or tucked in close by on the couch. She is loyal to her people, mostly the person who feeds her, but she also loves the accessory people in the home. (more so if you know the way to a girl’s heart is to have always have snacks!)
Tilly is a very sweet, sensitive gal that loves all the attention being good brings her. She is eager to please. Tilly is very food oriented and so as her trust in you grows, she will learn whatever you are wanting her to learn if it’s followed by a tasty reward. She walks easily on a long leash in the woods with no pulling and on a short leash in the park. Although her prey drive is strong, she no longer rushes to chase squirrels or chipmunks. She LOVES to run off leash and would be thrilled to have a larger property that she could run top speed around.
Tilly is house trained and can be left loose in the home for short periods of time. She is typically quiet but will bark when visitors arrive in the home, then settles down once the excitement is over.
While Tilly was perfectly happy in her open soft crate at night, she was invited up to the big bed and that is her happy place now.
With proper introduction she does well meeting other dogs, as long as not too many dogs at once as that can be overwhelming. Seldom does she play with toys but when she does, she has a great time. She loves her daily walks in the woods and in the fields. She is coming around to meeting people with a little interest now. Having guests offer a treat or two, is very helpful in her introductions.
Her ideal home would have a large, fenced yard with easy outdoor access as she loves to sunbathe and run free in the yard. While she has not been kid tested, we think she would be most comfortable in an adult home; she’s not super playful and prefers a calm space.
