That “doggy breath” or stinky kitty breath is not normal! 🦷🐾

Dental disease is one of the most common health concerns in pets—especially after the age of 3. In fact, many dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease by then, often without obvious signs.

Plaque and tartar can hide below the gumline, causing painful inflammation, infected teeth, and even tooth loss. Pets are very good at hiding dental pain, so they may still eat and play despite a sore mouth.

Watch for signs such as bad breath, yellow/brown tartar, red gums, drooling, pawing at the mouth, dropping food, chewing on one side, or becoming less interested in toys and treats.

This October is Dental Month at Hespeler Animal Hospital!

✨ 25% off dental procedures
✨ Complimentary dental visit
✨ Limited appointment spots available

A healthy mouth means a happier, more comfortable pet. Don’t wait until dental disease becomes painful—book your pet’s dental visit today!

🐾 Is Your Pet Extra Itchy Right Now? You’re Not Alone! 🌿
Late July and August are some of the toughest months of the year for pets with environmental allergies in Ontario.
During this time, grass pollens are at their peak, and w**d pollens (including ragw**d) begin to rise. This combination often leads to worsening allergy symptoms in many dogs—and some cats too.
Common signs of allergies include:
🐶 Constant scratching or licking
🐾 Chewing or licking paws
👂 Recurrent ear infections
🩹 Red, inflamed, or irritated skin
😴 Restlessness due to itching
How you can help:
✔️ Wipe your pet’s paws and coat after walks
✔️ Bathe regularly with a veterinarian-recommended shampoo
✔️ Stay on prescribed allergy medications
✔️ Book an appointment if symptoms are worsening—early treatment can prevent secondary skin and ear infections.
At Hespeler Animal Hospital, we offer comprehensive allergy management, including medical treatment, skin and ear evaluations, and long-term allergy care plans tailored to your pet.

🐾 A Busy but Rewarding Day at Hespeler Animal Hospital – Welcome to the World, Little Ones! 🐾❤️

Today our veterinary team had the privilege of performing an emergency cesarean section, safely delivering 7 beautiful puppies into the world! 🐶💕

Every C-section is a race against time. From the moment the decision is made, our team works together to ensure the safest possible outcome for both mom and her puppies. While one team member carefully monitors anesthesia and the mother’s vital signs, others are ready to receive each newborn, clear their airways, stimulate breathing, keep them warm, and monitor their progress.

✨ Today’s outcome:
🐾 7 healthy puppies delivered
❤️ Mom is recovering well after surgery
👩‍⚕️ An amazing team effort from our veterinarians and veterinary technicians

Many brachycephalic breeds, such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and similar breeds, have a higher risk of needing a cesarean section because of their puppies’ relatively large heads and narrow birth canals. Recognizing when natural labor is not progressing normally and intervening early can make the difference between life and death for both the mother and her puppies.

Signs that a pregnant dog needs immediate veterinary attention include:
• Active straining for more than 20–30 minutes without producing a puppy
• More than 2 hours between puppies when additional puppies are expected
• Green or bloody discharge before the first puppy is born
• Extreme lethargy, weakness, or signs of distress
• Pregnancy extending beyond the expected due date without labor beginning

At Hespeler Animal Hospital, we are equipped to provide:
✅ Pregnancy monitoring
✅ Digital radiographs to count puppies
✅ Ultrasound assessment of fetal heart rates
✅ Emergency and scheduled cesarean sections
✅ Neonatal puppy resuscitation and intensive newborn care
✅ Post-operative care for both mother and puppies

Seeing seven tiny lives take their very first breaths is one of the most rewarding moments in veterinary medicine. It reminds us why we do what we do every single day. ❤️

Congratulations to the proud family, and thank you for trusting us with such an important moment!
