A painful abdomen brought this senior German Shepherd to our hospital—and time was critical.

Using our in-house ultrasound, we were able to scan immediately and identify a large mass on the spleen. Splenic tumours can be “silent killers”: many pets show few warning signs until the mass ruptures, causing sudden internal bleeding and a life-threatening emergency.

Because we could diagnose the concern right away, our team proceeded with urgent surgery to remove the spleen and mass before rupture occurred.

This case is a powerful reminder of how rapid access to in-house ultrasound, prompt decision-making, and surgical care can make all the difference. We are incredibly grateful to have helped give this patient the best possible chance. ❤️🐾

If your pet develops a swollen or painful abdomen, weakness, pale gums, collapse, reduced appetite, or unusual lethargy, please seek veterinary care urgently.

That “doggy breath” or stinky kitty breath is not normal! 🦷🐾

Dental disease is one of the most common health concerns in pets—especially after the age of 3. In fact, many dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease by then, often without obvious signs.

Plaque and tartar can hide below the gumline, causing painful inflammation, infected teeth, and even tooth loss. Pets are very good at hiding dental pain, so they may still eat and play despite a sore mouth.

Watch for signs such as bad breath, yellow/brown tartar, red gums, drooling, pawing at the mouth, dropping food, chewing on one side, or becoming less interested in toys and treats.

This October is Dental Month at Hespeler Animal Hospital!

🐾 Is Your Pet Extra Itchy Right Now? You’re Not Alone! 🌿
Late July and August are some of the toughest months of the year for pets with environmental allergies in Ontario.
During this time, grass pollens are at their peak, and w**d pollens (including ragw**d) begin to rise. This combination often leads to worsening allergy symptoms in many dogs—and some cats too.
Common signs of allergies include:
🐶 Constant scratching or licking
🐾 Chewing or licking paws
👂 Recurrent ear infections
🩹 Red, inflamed, or irritated skin
😴 Restlessness due to itching
How you can help:
✔️ Wipe your pet’s paws and coat after walks
✔️ Bathe regularly with a veterinarian-recommended shampoo
✔️ Stay on prescribed allergy medications
✔️ Book an appointment if symptoms are worsening—early treatment can prevent secondary skin and ear infections.
At Hespeler Animal Hospital, we offer comprehensive allergy management, including medical treatment, skin and ear evaluations, and long-term allergy care plans tailored to your pet.
