Horses are a passion for me and I truly love to watch colts develop as they begin to understand what it means to perform actions, not just REactions. The training methods that I use in the beginning stages help to lay a solid foundation for every type of horse, regardless of the discipline. I have started a wide variety of horses that have gone on to be succesful in many different avenues including working cow horses, trail/family horses, reining, dressage and jumping horses. Among various other things depending on what the horse is being trained for, I teach them to respect my space, give to pressure, accept the flag and handle their feet. How quickly the horse moves through the ground work phase of his/her training largely depends on how much he/she has been handled up to that point, each horse is unique so I do approach every horse a little differently. Generally I do spend at least a week on ground work. After I am on the horse I continue teaching the horse to move away from leg and rein pressure, as well as soften his/her neck laterally and vertically. after a few rides in the big corral we head out to some of the pastures and trails and log some quiet miles that allow for the horse to relax and think. I believe that most horses can benefit from being ridden outside checking cattle ect. however if the horse is going on to be a performance horse we do spend more time "schooling" teaching the basics of hip and shoulder control, loping circles and softening at the poll.
