Meet Biscotti, a handsome 5-month-old Lop who visited Dr Jade on Friday for his castration procedure.
During his stay, Biscotti checked into his own private heated hospital suite and enjoyed five-star care from start to finish. To ensure a smooth and pain-free experience, he received a carefully tailored combination of medications before his procedure. In fact, he was so relaxed that his little tongue was hanging out! ๐Ÿ˜

To keep him safe and comfortable throughout his anaesthetic, Biscotti was snuggled up on our Bair Hugger warming system from pre-medication right through to recovery. Maintaining body temperature is an important part of rabbit anaesthesia and helps support a smooth recovery.
Once awake, Biscotti recovered beautifully and tucked into a syringe-full of Oxbow Critical Care, followed by a very special post-operative picnic lovingly packed by his mum. ๐Ÿ’š

While he was here, Biscotti also took advantage of our Rabbit Vaccination Promotion, receiving his first ๐…๐ข๐ฅ๐š๐ฏ๐š๐œ ๐ฏ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ข๐ง๐ž, which protects against the deadly rabbit calicivirus strains RHDV1 and RHDV2, as well as a ๐…๐‘๐„๐„ ๐‘๐ž๐ฏ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ to help protect against external parasites such as fleas, mites and lice, which can spread disease between rabbits.
After a thorough health check, Dr Jade was happy to give Biscotti a clean bill of health and an impressive ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐œ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ before sending him home with pain relief for the next five days. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Did you know that male rabbits can be castrated from around ๐Ÿ“ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐š๐ ๐ž? Castration helps prevent unwanted pregnancies, allows males and females to be kept together safely, reduces hormone-related behaviours such as mounting, spraying and aggression, and eliminates the risk of testicular tumours.
Following surgery, rabbits require approximately ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ-๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ ๐๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ for healing, with follow-up examinations performed to monitor recovery and ensure everything is progressing smoothly.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), also known as calicivirus, is a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting domestic rabbits. There are currently three strains present in Australia: RHDV1, RHDV1a and RHDV2, with RHDV2 now the dominant strain causing deaths in pet rabbits.
RHDV can spread through direct contact with infected rabbits or their urine, faeces and saliva. It can also be spread indirectly via contaminated clothing, shoes, food, bedding and equipment. Insects such as flies, mosquitoes and fleas can carry the virus between rabbits, meaning even rabbits that live exclusively indoors are at risk.

To help protect your bunny, Montrose Vet Centre is offering a special Rabbit Vaccination Promotion featuring Filavac VHD K C + V. Unlike the previously used Cylap vaccine, which primarily protected against the original RHDV1 strain, Filavac is an inactivated bivalent vaccine that provides protection against both RHDV1 and RHDV2, offering broader protection for Australian rabbits.

As part of this package, your rabbit will receive their annual vaccination, one month of FREE parasite treatment, a thorough health check and a comprehensive husbandry assessment with our experienced exotic veterinarian. This assessment includes tailored advice on nutrition, housing, environmental enrichment, dental health, parasite prevention and overall preventative care, ensuring your rabbit is receiving the very best care possible.
While annual vaccination is essential, we recommend twice-yearly health checks for rabbits, as they are masters at hiding illness. Regular examinations allow us to identify problems early and keep your rabbit happy and healthy.

Weโ€™re excited to share that Montrose Veterinary Centre is now able to see a wider range of exotic pets, alongside our usual canine and feline patients.

This morning we had the pleasure of meeting some very special patients, including a gorgeous ferret and an Indian Ringneck parrot! ๐Ÿฆœโค๏ธ

Today, our team had the pleasure of helping Frank, a very special Afghan veteran support animal.

After some X-rays last week, it was determined that Frank needed surgery to remove one of his toes. Our team performed the procedure today, and Frank was an incredibly brave patient throughout it all.

Weโ€™re so pleased to have been able to help Frank get on the road to recovery and back to doing what he does best โ€” supporting his human.
