🐱 Cat owners: keep your cats safely contained.

H5 bird flu has been detected in Tasmania. Everyone can help protect wildlife, pets and their community by knowing what to do. H5 bird flu can affect birds and other animals.

Keeping cats indoors or in a secure enclosure helps reduce their contact with wild birds and other wildlife. Cats that are kept at home are also less likely to roam and impact Tasmania's native
wildlife.

If you see sick or dead birds or wildlife:

✅ Avoid contact
✅ Record what you see
✅ Report sightings to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
✅ Check current advice at: nre.tas.gov.au/BirdFlu

**H5N1 bird flu has now been confirmed in Tasmania.**

There is no need to panic, but there are some simple things we can do now to reduce the risk to our cats.

Cats are susceptible to H5N1 and infections overseas have been associated with contact with infected birds and consumption of contaminated raw meat or raw pet food.

For now, we recommend:

🚫 STOP FEEDING RAW FOOD
Avoid raw meat, particularly raw poultry, and raw pet food. Feed cooked or commercially prepared canned or dry food instead.

🏠 KEEP CATS INDOORS
This reduces the opportunity for cats to hunt or come into contact with wild birds.

🐦 KEEP CATS AWAY FROM WILD BIRDS
Do not allow your cat to approach, catch or eat sick or dead birds.

📞 REPORT SICK OR DEAD BIRDS

Do not touch sick or dead birds, and keep cats and other pets well away.

Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888 (24 hours)

If safe to do so, take a photo or video and record the location to assist authorities with the report.

If your cat becomes unwell and has had contact with a wild bird or has been eating a raw diet, please phone your veterinarian before bringing them into the clinic.

This is not a reason to panic or be frightened. It is a reason to be aware and take sensible precautions while we learn more about H5N1 in Tasmania.

After 13,187 dental x-rays we retired our dental radiograph machine today. Dr Moira was a bit sad to see her go after a decade of service 😿 Feline dentistry is not possible without dental radiographs and as many clients would know Dr Moira’s passion is feline dentistry 🦷😻 Let’s hope our new machine is as hardworking 😺

⚠️ H5N1 Bird Flu Detected on Mainland Australia ⚠️

The first suspected case of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has been detected in a wild migratory bird in south-west Western Australia.

At this stage there is no evidence of infection in commercial poultry farms and there have been no reports of mass wildlife deaths. However, this serves as an important reminder for cat owners to remain vigilant.

🐱 Why does this matter to cats?

Around the world, cats have contracted H5N1 after exposure to infected birds or by consuming raw poultry products. Infection in cats can be severe and may be fatal.

As a precaution, we recommend:

✅ Avoid feeding raw chicken or other raw poultry products to your cat
✅ Keep cats indoors where possible to reduce hunting of wild birds
✅ Prevent contact with sick or dead birds
✅ Contact your veterinarian if your cat develops unusual symptoms, particularly respiratory or neurological signs

While the risk to Australian cats currently remains low, this is a situation we will continue to monitor closely.
