Some patients arrive at our hospital weighing less than a block of chocolate 🍫

This tiny kitten, just one week old and weighing only 120 grams, was dropped into the care of AES Canberra.

When our Operations Manager, Geoff, arrived at the hospital that morning, he was greeted by the tiny patient and quickly got to work, syringe-feeding milk replacer to ensure the kitten had some much-needed nourishment before continuing on to Canberra Street Cat Alliance.

Sometimes the smallest patients make the biggest impression 💙

We're happy to report the little one has since been transferred and is doing well so far.

Reminder as we spend more time outside ☀️

Sticks aren't safe fetch toys. They can splinter and cause serious injuries to your pet's mouth, throat or stomach. Some cases even require emergency surgery.

Choose safer, pet-friendly fetch toys to keep playtime fun and injury-free ⚾

🐶 Could your dog be hiding pain?

Dogs are incredibly good at masking discomfort, which can make it difficult to know when something is wrong. From changes in behaviour and appetite to difficulty moving, there are several subtle signs that could indicate your pet is hurting and due for a trip to the vet.

Knowing what to look for can help you get them the care they need sooner and keep them comfortable and happy. 💙

School holidays mean more adventures for our pets... but they can also mean more emergencies.

With pets spending more time out and about, we often see an increase in injuries, tick paralysis cases, snake bites and other unexpected accidents during the holiday period.

Before you head off on your next adventure, take 30 seconds to save your local emergency vet number in your phone. 📱 It could make all the difference when every minute counts.

Stay safe and enjoy the school holidays 💙

As the weather warms up, snake activity starts to increase again 🐍

Spring is a time when snakes become more active as they emerge to bask, hunt and breed. It's the perfect time for pet owners to stay alert and be aware of the signs a snake may be nearby.

If you spot a snake, keep pets well away and contact a licensed snake catcher. If your pet is bitten by a snake, contact your local vet immediately.

Today on R U OK? Day, we're reminded that a simple conversation can have a lasting impact 💛

In busy workplaces and everyday life, it’s easy to miss the signs that someone may be struggling. Taking a moment to genuinely check in with a colleague, friend, family member or neighbour can help them feel seen, heard and supported.

Let's make asking "Are you OK?" more than a once-a-year reminder. Start the conversation, listen without judgement, and help create a culture of care every day.

We all know the common signs of mild allergic reactions in pets, like hives, itching, or a runny nose. But do you know how to spot a severe allergic reaction? ⚠️

While uncommon, dogs can experience life-threatening allergic reactions that require immediate veterinary attention. If your dog is showing signs of an allergic reaction, or you suspect they may have been exposed to an allergen, contact your vet straight away. Never take a "wait and see" approach.

Even seemingly mild symptoms can progress to anaphylaxis, particularly with repeated exposure to the same allergen. When it comes to allergic reactions, early treatment can make all the difference 💙

🚨 Important Temporary Daytime Closure Notice

Due to a veterinary shortage, Animal Emergency Service Hobart will be temporarily closed during the day from 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, for the remainder of August.

We will continue to provide emergency care:
• Overnight during the week, when regular veterinary clinics are closed
• 24 hours a day on weekends

Like many veterinary teams right now, we're navigating a nationwide shortage of emergency vets, and are committed to staying open when we can do so safely for both your pets and our team. We're actively working to bring more vets on board and truly appreciate your patience while we do.

Thank you for your understanding. Your support means a great deal to our team and helps us continue caring for the pets who need us most 💙

Following the recently confirmed bird flu case in Tasmania, we understand many bird owners may be feeling concerned.

To help protect your bird, our team, and the other animals in our care, please follow these important steps:

1️⃣ If your bird is unwell, please call our hospital for advice before travelling.
Our team will assess the situation, provide guidance on the safest next steps, and advise whether your bird can be seen and what precautions may be required.

2️⃣ If you notice sick or dead wild birds, do not touch them or get too close.

Instead, record your location and contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

While bird flu is being taken very seriously, the current risk to most pets and people remains low. Transmission to pets is uncommon and is typically associated with direct contact with infected birds or other infected animals. Many common bird illnesses can also cause similar symptoms, so a sick bird does not necessarily indicate bird flu.

📞 If your bird is showing signs of illness, please contact our hospital for advice before travelling.

We're here to support you and your pets and will continue to share updates as more information becomes available. 💙

Cracker Night is tomorrow! 🎇

While fireworks might be exciting for us, they can be terrifying and even dangerous for our pets.

A little preparation tomorrow night can make all the difference and could even save a life.

The loud bangs, bright flashes, and unfamiliar smells can trigger fear and panic, leading to injuries or pets going missing..

How to help keep your pets safe
✅ Bring pets indoors before dark
✅ Create a calm, secure space with their bed or favourite blanket
✅ Close windows, curtains, and doors to reduce noise and flashing lights
✅ Play TV or music to help mask fireworks sounds
✅ Ensure pets are wearing ID tags and details are up to date
✅ Keep animals securely contained (check fences and gates)

⚠️ The risks are real
• Pets running away or getting lost
• Injuries from panic or escape attempts
• Severe stress and anxiety
• Burns or poisoning from fireworks debris

If your pet is injured or unwell tonight, AES Hobart is open 24 hours for emergencies.

For more tips on keeping your dog calm during fireworks, read our full article (link in the comments).

We’re so proud of Vet Nurse Sarah for completing her first anaesthetic/surgery training shift with AES and Vet in the Valley Animal Hospital 👏

Sarah was actively involved throughout the day, supporting induction, clipping and skin prep, surgical monitoring, and patient recovery, working alongside Dr Deb Kersten and Courtney Kettleton.

She did an incredible job caring for a variety of patients and conditions!

🚨 Parvovirus alert for dog owners in Tasmania 🚨

Dr Brooke Schampers explains what canine parvovirus is, the signs to watch for, and how you can help protect your dog.

To reduce the risk:
✅ Keep vaccinations up to date
✅ Avoid dog parks and shared areas for now
✅ Practice good hygiene (disinfect shoes, surfaces and equipment)
✅ Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog shows vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or loss of appetite

🚨 We’re seeing multiple reports of canine parvovirus across Southern Tasmania, including cases shared within our local general practice community.

Parvovirus spreads easily between dogs and can cause severe illness, particularly in young puppies and dogs that are not fully vaccinated.

Dog owners are urged to:
• Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date
• Avoid public parks, dog parks and shared areas for now
• Practice good hygiene (disinfect shoes, surfaces and equipment)
• Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog shows symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or loss of appetite

⚠️ Parvovirus can survive in the environment for long periods, making prevention and vaccination especially important.

Keep your dogs safe and spread the word (not the virus). For further advice, contact your local veterinarian.
