Chapter One Dog Training

Chapter One Dog Training Chapter One Dog Training was established to bring a highly personalised training service to puppy owners in Brisbane.

I'm here to help you feel confident training your new puppy so they become a well-behaved adult dog!

06/05/2026

If your dog locks onto distractions on walks and starts barking or pulling… this one is for you 😅

You don’t need more force or frustration. Scolding them or dragging them away isn’t going to help.

Instead of trying to STOP what you don’t want, you need a way to show your dog what TO DO.

Replacing an undesirable behaviour with a desirable one is the goal ✅

This simple U-turn game teaches your dog that checking in and moving with you is always the better option. You can even put a cue on it. Mine is “this way!”

Save this game to play on your next walk 💜🐶

Ps. If you have a puppy, play this fun and engaging game before any barking or lunging starts! We all want dogs who choose to focus on us 😍

Q: How long should I train my puppy at home?

Short answer: way less than you think 😅

Puppy training at home works best when it’s short, simple, and repeated often. You do NOT need long training sessions for it to be effective.

Here are two easy methods I recommend:

Method 1: Count your treats 🍗
This is my favourite because it keeps things really structured.

Count out 10 treats.
Do 10 repetitions of something simple, like:
- 5 name responses
- 5 nose touches

Then take a little break and do another 10 treats - maybe for something like loose leash walking around the lounge room.

Method 2: Set a phone timer ⏱️
Put your phone on a 2 minute timer.
Do a quick training session during that time, then stop when the timer goes off.

That’s it!

Less is better. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of “just one more…” or turning it into a long session, but puppies learn best in short bursts where they can stay engaged and succeed.

To be an A+ student, do these short and sweet sessions several times over the day.

If you keep sessions short and frequent, you’ll see way better progress than trying to do big, exhausting training blocks 💜

Our first double header trial of 2026!

Thank you to everyone who came, whether it was one trial or all day! I really appreciate all the kind and friendly members of our community who make the day so enjoyable 💜

Here’s my overview and courses 🥰

Trial 1
Beginners
4/12 passes. Unfortunately a few dogs were distracted this morning!

💝 Judges Choice: Samantha and Harriet. Now an 11 year old retired agility dog, I’m thrilled they came and showed off their teamwork!

Go the Distance Level 1 & 2
2/6 passes. It was a simple course, and most teams were so close to a pass!

💝 Judges Choice: Victoria and Dusty. I could tell they’ve been working hard on improving their distance handling!

Intermediate:
3/5 passes. A challenging course for fast dogs!

💝 Judges Choice: Andrea & Winnie, a confident joyful run to watch!

Trial 2
Beginners:
8/11 passes. Such a high pass rate!

💝 Judges Choice: Emma & Ruby. This was a very special new team, with a junior handler, who did their first run today.

Go the Distance Level 1 & 2:
6/7 passes. A fun flowy course!

💝 Judges Choice: Andrea & Winnie. A teeny tiny, formerly anxious poodle who confidently ran out from her mum TWICE today!

Intermediate
4/5 passes. It had a tight turn and obstacle discrimination which was tricky for speedy dogs!

💝 Judges Choice: Emily & Nancy. For great teamwork and communication, at the end of a long day and even when Nancy prefers flowy distance courses, she still listened!

Last but not least, congratulations to Mirna and Eppy, and Amanda and Gabby for achieving their Beginner titles 🥳🥳🥳

Q: How long is each puppy class?

Each class runs for 45 minutes 🐾

And honestly… even that is pushing it for most puppies 😅

Puppies have very short attention spans, which is why my classes aren’t about drilling your puppy for 45 minutes straight.

They’re about YOU (the humans!) learning how to train your puppy. Each week, you’ll come along and get hands-on practice so you feel confident knowing what to do at home.

Here’s how the class is structured:

We start with around 20 minutes together as a group, working on key skills.

Then we break into a circuit of individual activities, where you and your puppy rotate through different stations. We’ll move between different rooms and setups to keep things fresh and interesting. Some stations are set up for you to work through independently, and some are one-on-one with me so I can coach you directly.

This might include:
- jumping in and out of a crate at the vet
- exploring a confidence-building room
- learning loose leash walking with me

Changing the environment and the activity helps keeps your puppy engaged (instead of getting tired, bitey, or frustrated).

We finish with a quick recap so you can make notes, ask questions, and leave knowing exactly what to practice at home 💜

🐾 Entries close in 2 days! 🐾 Hoopers Australia Trial – Sunday May 3rd at Wellington Point, Brisbane

Just a quick reminder that entries close Wednesday April 29 ⏳

I’m also keeping a close eye on the weather 🌦️

If it rains or the grounds are too sloshy, we’ll cancel and you’ll receive a refund or credit.

If it’s mostly sunny and dry, we’re on and ready for a fun day of Hoopers! 🎀

Don’t miss your double chance to run, learn, and collect those passes 💜

FAQ: What age can my puppy start classes? Do they need to be fully vaccinated?

Puppies can start from 8 weeks, and they do not need to be fully vaccinated to begin.

You can safely join with one vaccination, usually given by your breeder when your puppy is 6–8 weeks old.

Classes are held indoors at a fully cleaned, sterilised vet clinic, so you can safely start training, socialisation, and confidence building early — when it matters most.

The most important socialisation and learning period happens between 8–16 weeks old, so waiting until your puppy is fully vaccinated can mean missing this critical window.

The ideal age to start is around 9 weeks, when they’ve had a few days to a week to settle in at home and get to know you.

I actually don’t accept puppies over 12 weeks for my signature puppy school program. While many puppy schools allow enrolment up to 16 weeks, by that age the early critical period has usually passed by the time you start classes 😅

My focus is on getting things right from the very beginning! This is also why my classes run as an 8-week program — so I can guide you through the entire critical window.

Early training makes a huge difference. It’s much easier to prevent problems than fix them later.

That’s why most people join as soon as they bring their puppy home 🐶

Have a puppy who will be under 12 weeks old in May? Enquire via the contact form for classes resuming Wednesday evening, May 6, or Sunday morning, May 10: https://chapteronedogtraining.com.au/contact-us/

These are 16-week-old puppies in their final lesson of puppy school 🎓

What you’re seeing here isn’t luck. It’s what happens when we consistently build focus in the right way.

One of the first things I teach is eye contact. Not “sit” or “stay”… but learning how to actually check in with you.

You’ll notice a few simple but important details in this clip:
* Hands behind backs, so we’re not using food to bribe them!
* No constant name calling
* Puppies being rewarded for choosing to look at their owners around distractions
