Considering how much they p**p, you’d think that piggies might be dirty or stinky. But actually, they’re quite clean little critters!

Here’s how they do it:

🐾Licking their fur to remove dirt and loose hair.

🐹 Using their paws to wipe their face and eyes.

💧Using eye secretions on their paws as part of grooming their face and fur.

👅 Grooming other guinea pigs as a social and cleaning behaviour.

🪮 Keeping their coat tidy through frequent grooming.

Sometimes they need a little bath if they’ve been sitting in their p*e, if they can’t clean themselves, if they’ve been unwell, or if they’re just a bit smellier than usual.

But the fact that they instinctively take care of themselves like this is wonderful to know! ❤️

What a great Open Day - the first one of Spring, and we felt it with a very warm day!

Thanks so much to everyone who came along, it’s always great seeing you all and having a chat.

Without your support we wouldn’t be able to rescue, support and rehome guinea pigs, so THANK YOU!

With Spring, comes storms. ⛈️

So, while storm prep might be on your mind, we thought now could be a good time to have a chat about how to keep your piggies safe in a storm.

☔️ Keeping your piggies indoors and undercover is a great first step. A wet piggy can get chills, so keeping them indoors a nice dry area is a great start.

🌞 Before a storm hits it’s normally quite hot and humid. Check out our post from earlier this week on piggy temperature control to make sure your little one is coping in the heat.

⛺️ Piggies get frightened of the thunder too! Covering their cage with a towel and giving them plenty of hideys so they feel safe and protected is key.

📃 Make sure you have hay and pellets stocked up. If power goes out and veggies go yucky, the piggies will be just fine with their dry food until it comes back.

💼 Keep their carrier nearby just in case the storm gets nasty and you need to evacuate.

And remember: guinea pigs are prey animals, so stress can sometimes be subtle. Keep an eye out for changes in eating, drinking, behaviour, breathing or activity.
