Ever picked up your dog after an op and noticed a neat little shaved square on a front leg? Here's why.

Dr Vincent Moore is setting up a drip line, a few steps from our theatre door. Before most anaesthetics, a small catheter goes into a vein in the leg. The fur is clipped first so that spot stays clean.

While your dierekind is asleep, that line does three jobs. It runs fluids that help keep blood pressure steady, because anaesthetic drugs can make it dip. It tops up hydration after the pre-op fast. And if anything changes on the table, the team can already get into a vein straight away, so nobody has to find one in a hurry.

The fur grows back in a few weeks.

Line first. Then theatre.

What you can't see in this photo is the homework.

A horse that stands this quietly for a needle has usually had plenty of practice long before vet day.

You can do that practice at home, a few minutes at a time. Run your hands along the neck and down each leg. Touch the ears and the muzzle. Pick up each foot. Stop while your horse is still relaxed, give it a good scratch, and try again tomorrow.

When being handled is just normal, vet day is quicker, safer for everyone and far less stressful for your horse.

Only one of these two got the memo about the camera.

Mind you, it's hard to sneak up on a horse. Did you know they have the largest eyes of any land mammal? Set wide on the sides of the head, those eyes see almost all the way around. There are just two blind spots: right under the nose, and directly behind.

That's why the old yard rule still stands. Walk up towards the shoulder, never straight at the face or from behind, and talk as you come.

Kitty's name is Baba and she was 20 years old.

Unfortunately doctor had to do the humane thing and euthanase her. She was old and suffering from severe kidney failure as well as seizures.

Did you know? African Horse Sickness vaccination is compulsory for horses in South Africa, and it has to be repeated every year. Midges spread the disease, so it pays to plan your horse's vaccinations well before the risky season starts.

Some days, our consulting room comes with plane trees and a mountain view.

When your patient weighs 500 kg, it makes sense for us to come to them. Horses, cattle and small stock get looked after right where they live, with less stress for everyone.

Ears up, eyes on you. Somebody heard the feed bucket. ;)

Did you know? A horse's teeth keep erupting for most of its life, and chewing wears them down unevenly. Sharp edges can cut the cheeks and make eating (and the bit) uncomfortable.

Look out for dropped feed, slow chewing or head tossing under saddle. A yearly dental check keeps everything running smoothly.
