Yesterday, we were in beautiful Astoria with friends celebrating my husband's birthday when the calls came in.
A couple of weeks ago, I started making plans to help a site with about 12 to 15 cats. A resident had passed away and the home was now getting ready to sell. Lots of repairs and cleanup being done.
Our first priority was to spay/neuter cats. I was able to grab a semi-feral mom and her 4 kittens. But there was another Mom with kittens and a very sick kitten without a mom or siblings.
But quickly after making plans and scheduling spay appointments the desire of the resident was to the remove cats. I explained MY process and
I don't like to move cats. Cats are territorial and moving ferals to other locations is only 65% successful. So I started speaking with neighbors to see if anyone else was feeding the cats. Sadly, I found that the neighbors were very frustrated with all the cats. "Are they taking their cats with them?" Well, that plan didn't pan out. Then the residents decided that they would figure out the cat situation and no longer wanted help...well, not the help I offered.
Fast forward to yesterday, one neighbor found some kittens in her yard, put them in a box and took them to the home with all the cats. Both the resident and neighbor called me...things were falling apart. Kittens were taken from their Mom and it was clear the resident wasn't going to help the kittens.
In my panic, I called Nine Lives & More Rescue to ask if they could get the box of kittens right away. And then I would make a plan to get the mom and reunite them. Gratefully they did get the 2 kittens left in box.
So, after our day in Astoria, we got home changed our clothes and loaded up not knowing what to expect.
The sick kitten was easily grabbed. So sick. She couldn't see me approach her.
Then we saw the Mom of another litter, we made sure we knew where her kittens were then setup traps and got her. We grabbed her kittens. Unfortunately, I didn't see very many cats there, particularly a pregnant female whom I think is the Mom to the kittens Nine Lives picked up.
But here's my concern, we found traps set and actually a cat in it. I don't know how long it was in there but it was going to be left there overnight with no one checking on it. And I am being told they are moving cats to a barn home. But are they spaying them before they move them? So challenging. These poor cats lost their feeder, now they are losing their home.
Good news, is was able to get an appointment with my vet to see Rey (sick kitten). Tabby Cat will be going as well for a checkup.
Our rescue could really use some help with these veterinary bills.
