It's National Veterinary Technician Week, and we're celebrating the heart of our hospital! 💓🎉

Veterinary technicians are critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices and play vital roles in preserving animal health and welfare. Nurse, lab tech, anesthetist, radiographer, dental hygienist, and professional cuddler, all in one shift. Our vet techs and assistants do it all with compassion and skill.

Pet parents, if one of our techs has made a difference for your furry family member, tell us in the comments! We'll pass along every word. 💬

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and here in Rome we're reminded that the land we live on has a much longer history than the city itself.

Long before Rome was founded, the rivers that meet here, the Etowah and the Oostanaula, which join to form the Coosa, were home to Muskogean-speaking peoples, ancestors of today's Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Later, this valley became the heart of the Cherokee Nation. In the 1830s, both the Muscogee and the Cherokee were forced from these lands, and many died on the Trail of Tears. Their nations are still here today, and so are their stories.

Dogs are part of those stories. Across the Southeast, dogs worked alongside Indigenous families. They hunted with them, guarded their villages, and provided companionship (just as they do now.) Archaeologists have found dogs buried with care at sites across the region, which shows how much they were valued.

The Cherokee even have a story about how the Milky Way was made. A dog was caught stealing cornmeal, and as it ran away into the sky, the meal spilled from its mouth and left a trail of white across the night. The Cherokee call the Milky Way "Where the Dog Ran." 💫

This week, we invite you to honor that history with your own best friend. Take your dog for a walk along the Oostanaula on Rome's Heritage Trail, near the Chieftains Museum. Walk slowly, look at the river, and think about the people and dogs who walked these banks for thousands of years before us. 🐕

Share a photo of your riverside walk and tag us. We'd love to see your pups out on the trail.

🎃👻 The spooky season is fun for us, but it can be stressful (and sometimes dangerous) for our pets!

Keep your furry family members safe and comfortable this season with a few simple tips:

🐾 Keep candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free treats, safely out of reach. Xylitol toxicity can be fatal!
🕯️ Keep candles, decorations, and electrical cords away from curious noses and paws.
🚪 Give anxious pets a quiet, secure space away from the door and trick-or-treaters.
🎶 Calming music or familiar white noise can help mask spooky sounds and frequent doorbells.
🐕 Make sure pets are wearing proper ID and microchip information is up to date in case an open door leads to an unexpected escape.
👗 If your pet wears a costume, make sure it’s comfortable, safe, and never restricts breathing, movement, or vision.
💊 If you feel your pet may benefit from a pharmecuetical approach, schedule a consultation exam with one of our veterinarians.

Most importantly, know your pet’s limits. If Halloween festivities are too overwhelming, it’s perfectly okay to let them skip the celebration. ❤️🎃

Happy First Day of Fall! 🍂

Just because we're out of the 90° temperatures, doesn't mean pests take a break. In fact, fall is one of the sneakiest seasons for flea and tick activity, and many pets go unprotected because pet parents assume the risk drops with the temperature.

Keep your pet's parasite prevention going strong this season! 🍁 Not sure if your pet is up to date? Give us a call; we're happy to help you stay one step ahead.
