Roosters… What is the benefit? Other than the obvious I was sitting wondering if I should keep my rooster or just go back to a hens only. Extra feed for something that doesn’t produce, a possible noise irritation to neighbors, the potential of him deciding he doesn’t like me one day and attacking me 😂…. These were my thoughts. BUT then I started to see the benefits, this last 2 weeks after a predator attacks our rooster stopped sleeping in the coop with the girls but started to sleep outside. Hmm I thought “over crowding?” No I went out to check on the chickens and I heard a drum like sound and then follows by several crows! What? I didn’t even know they could make that sound! My rooster was showing anything that came around that be was bigger and stronger! Trust me it startled me even.. Then I started really paying attention to him, not only does he have a specific sound to let the girls know where each pile of food is but he gives another distinct sounds when I come walking to them, not a fear warning but a “hey! The food lady is here, come and get it!” Then this morning I saw the predator taking my mini chickens! Why? Because my rooster let of another shriek which was clearly a warning/ distress call! I ran out and found a chicken hawk.. If I didn’t have my rooster who told me what was about to happen and warn the girls to hide, I would have lost another little lady. Lesson? Yes roosters are worth it 🐓
