Meet Bryana Peters, our Behavior & Pathways Intake Manager, professional pet body-language reader, and frequent user of the phrase, “Sorry, I’m going to be rude to you.” 😂

(Don’t worry. This usually means she has to do something a pet would prefer she absolutely did not.)

Bryana first fell in love with animal welfare during an internship with a shelter veterinarian at her small community shelter, and she’s been hooked ever since.

What keeps her going? The breakthroughs.

She’s watched pets like Greyson and Ridley make incredible progress and eventually find homes, experiences that showed her just how much patience, understanding, and science can change a pet’s world.

Her current favorite project? Marshmallow Smores, who Bryana lovingly describes as a “high-arousal queen” 👑 who is VERY clear with her body language.

Funny enough, high-arousal and overstimulated cats used to be some of Bryana’s biggest challenges. Now? They’re some of her favorite pets to work with.

Her philosophy? “Love is blind.”

And sometimes love also means saying, “Sorry, I’m going to be rude to you,” right before doing what’s best for them. 💙

118 ADOPTIONS! 🎉🐾

August was one for the books! 118 pets found homes, our highest number of adoptions in any month this year!

A huge part of that incredible month was Clear the Shelters, and we’re so grateful to everyone who adopted, shared our posts, told a friend, or helped spread the word about the pets waiting for homes.

118 pets are starting a brand-new chapter because our community showed up for them. 💙

Haze’s story with us started four years ago. 😿

She first came to Lost Our Home as a stray in 2022 and was adopted just a few days later. Nearly four years later, in March 2026, Haze came back.

Her family had been struggling with significant behavioral challenges and no longer felt safe managing them in the home. When Haze returned, she was extremely overwhelmed, highly aroused, and sensitive to handling. And being back in a shelter only made things harder.

The sounds. The smells. The activity. The unfamiliar people. For a cat who was already struggling to regulate her emotions, it could all become too much very quickly. So we learned Haze.

Our team spent months learning her body language and what made her feel safe. We discovered that she loved wand toys and could sometimes be won over with treats. We learned when she wanted interaction and, more importantly, when she was telling us she needed space. We worked with her on cooperative care and celebrated the small moments of progress that might not look like much from the outside, but meant everything for Haze.

Still, we knew that no amount of love from our team could replace what she really needed: a home with someone who understood her.

Last week, someone chose Haze. 💙 Her adopter has experience with cats with behavioral needs and understood exactly what bringing Haze home would mean. They were willing to respect her boundaries, work with her, and give her the chance to be more than the most difficult moments of her past. And so far, Haze is doing amazing in her new home.

This is why we keep trying. Why we keep learning. Why we keep looking for the right person, even when finding them takes longer than we ever hoped.
