🎉🎉We want to especially give a huge shout out to Brenda this Vet Tech Week! 🎉🎉
Brenda celebrated 40 years as a CVT with us this past June! We are so grateful to have her. Brenda’s title might be CVT, but to us she is also the office manager, clinic mom, queller of chaos, our go-to gal, and so much more. We would be lost without you Brenda! Thank you for putting up with us 😹🙊❤️🐾

🎓🐾 Tech Week, Day 2: What’s Behind Those Three Letters—CVT?

CVT stands for Certified Veterinary Technician—and behind that title are years of education, hands-on training, exams, and determination. Today, we’re celebrating the work it takes to earn it! 💙

📚 THE SCHOOLING
The path includes graduating from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program—typically a two-year associate degree, with four-year bachelor’s programs also available. Students tackle subjects like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, anesthesia, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and nursing care.

🏥 THE HANDS-ON TRAINING
Learning goes far beyond textbooks! Through labs, clinical experiences, and externships, students practice applying their knowledge to real patients under supervision. They must demonstrate essential clinical skills, learning how to perform procedures safely while keeping patients comfortable.

📝 THE “BOARDS”
Graduates must pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), a comprehensive exam that tests the knowledge needed for entry-level veterinary technician practice. Behind that exam are study sessions, practice questions, and a whole lot of preparation!

📜 THE CERTIFICATION
Passing the national exam is a major milestone. In Illinois, graduates must also apply for and receive their state credential before becoming a CVT.

💡 THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS
CVTs complete continuing education and renew their credentials throughout their careers. Veterinary medicine keeps advancing—and they keep learning.

Those three letters represent an investment of time, money, effort, and heart. At AEC, our CVTs bring that foundation into every shift, pairing their education with experience and compassion when pets need them most.

Join us in celebrating the dedication behind the credential! 👏🐾

AEC is affected by the city wide power outage.

💡 UPDATE: Power Restored! 🐾

Power has been fully restored to Animal Emergency Clinic, and we are back to operating at normal capacity!

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigated the outage. ❤️

--------------------------------------------------------------------AEC is open and ready to care for your pets!Animal Emergency Clinic is currently experiencing a power outage affecting our area. We remain OPEN at this time, but are operating in a limited capacity.

🐾 If your pet is experiencing an emergency, please do not hesitate to come in. Our team is available to evaluate and triage patients and provide care within our current capabilities.

Due to the power outage, some of our diagnostic and treatment capabilities may be limited. After evaluating your pet, we may recommend referral to another veterinary hospital if they require diagnostics, hospitalization, or treatment that we are temporarily unable to provide.

📞 Our phone service is also affected. We currently have ONE working phone line available to receive incoming calls. Please be patient with our team if you experience difficulty reaching us or a longer wait than usual.

At this time, we do not have an estimated time for full power restoration. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as our team works to continue caring for pets in our community as safely as possible. ❤️🐾

Keep using that flea and tick prevention through the second hard freeze (not frost, freeze). The falling leaves make a great cozy hiding spot for fleas and ticks. Hard freezes might not occur until late into November.

Even though fall is here, you still need to be on the lookout for ticks. In the fall, ticks hide under leaf litter until the sun warms them enough to come out. Continue to take preventative measures, such as treating your clothing and gear with permethrin, wearing tick repellent when outdoors, and performing tick checks when you come inside, to help decrease your risk of tick bites. Important announcement from the SCAC adoption center regarding panleukopenia in the cat population.

🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM SANGAMON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL & ADOPTION CENTER 🐱

We believe in being transparent with our community, so we want to let you know that feline panleukopenia (panleuk) has been identified in our shelter.

Panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus in cats, especially kittens and unvaccinated cats. It can spread through direct contact as well as contaminated litter boxes, bedding, bowls, clothing, hands and other surfaces. Cats can also appear healthy while incubating the virus.

Because of how easily this virus can spread, we are asking the public to please avoid bringing stray cats into the shelter unless it is absolutely necessary. We understand that finding a stray cat can be concerning, and we appreciate everyone who wants to help. Right now, however, bringing additional cats into the shelter can increase the risk of exposure for them and for the cats already in our care.

💙 If you find a healthy-looking stray cat, please contact us first at 217-535-3065 so we can discuss the safest options.

🏠 WE NEED FOSTERS!

If you are able to temporarily foster a cat or kitten that is not showing signs of illness, you could make a HUGE difference right now.

Getting healthy cats out of the shelter and into safe foster homes can help reduce crowding and exposure while we work through this situation.

If you are interested in fostering through Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center, please contact us about becoming a foster.

You can also apply to foster through our friends at the Animal Protective League.

📚 Want to learn more about panleukopenia?
The ASPCA has a detailed explanation of the disease, how it spreads, signs to watch for and prevention:
👉 ASPCApro — Feline Panleukopenia
https://www.aspcapro.org/topics-shelter-medicine-common-diseases/feline-panleukopenia

We know this may be concerning, but we believe our community deserves honest information about what is happening in the shelter. Our staff are taking precautions and working to protect the cats in our care.

Thank you for understanding, sharing this information and—most importantly—helping us keep more cats safe. ❤️🐾
