Meet Atticus! 📡🐾

First things first: Atticus has some of the raddest ears we’ve ever seen!

This little guy was actually born in a Foothill foster home and adopted as a young puppy. When his adoption didn’t work out and he returned to the rescue, we learned something incredibly valuable about him. While Atticus tried his best to be large and in charge with the resident dog, what we discovered is that other dogs actually make a whole lot of sense to him. Once he got over the hurdle of learning how to appropriately interact with them, everything started clicking into place. Today, his four legged foster siblings are one of the biggest keys to his confidence and success.

His story is also a great reminder that a dog being returned doesn’t mean it was a failure. Sometimes they’re opportunities to learn more about a dog and what they truly need to thrive. That’s exactly why we believe so strongly in finding the best fit for both the dog and the adopter.

Atticus is a goofy, playful, toy-loving puppy looking for a patient home that will continue helping him grow into the amazing dog we know he can be. ❤️

🌸💕 FOSTER or FOREVER HOME NEEDED for Marshmallow 💕🌸

Marshmallow is currently in a foster home where she is absolutely adored. Her foster loves her dearly and would happily continue to foster her, but unfortunately their personal summer obligations have changed, and they will need to be out of town for an extended period of time. Because of that, Marshmallow is looking for a new foster or forever home.

If your idea of a perfect dog is a couch potato, gardening buddy, or sunbathing companion, Marshmallow might be your girl.
She is one of the most laid-back dogs I've met. She's not looking for marathon hikes or hours of fetch. She's happiest hanging out with her people, lounging on the patio soaking up the sunshine, following you around the garden, or snoozing nearby while you relax.

Marshmallow is the definition of low-maintenance companionship. Want a dog to keep you company while you drink your morning coffee, work in the yard, or watch TV at night? That's her.
She has been through a lot and deserves a soft place to land where she can simply enjoy being loved.

🐶💡 Sunday Spotlight! 🐶💡

This week, we wanted to shine a spotlight on one of our Paws on the Block handlers and trainers, Aaron!

For those unfamiliar with the program, Paws on the Block is a collaborative foster and training program between Foothill Dog Rescue and Folsom State Prison. Dogs selected for the program live alongside a dedicated team of incarcerated handlers who provide daily care, training, socialization, enrichment, and structure while helping prepare them for successful lives in adoptive homes.

Aaron shared that one of the things he appreciates most about the program is that it helps dogs build trust, confidence, and self-control without breaking their spirit or changing who they are at their core.

He also believes the impact extends far beyond the dogs themselves.

“Regardless of who we are, we all bond over the dogs.”

Aaron explained that the dogs have a unique ability to bring people together. Staff, administration, and the incarcerated population all become invested in the dogs’ journeys, celebrate their successes, and rally around them during challenges. In many ways, the dogs help build community and create connections that might not otherwise exist.

Aaron has been part of the program since August 2024 and previously participated in Paws for Life K9 Rescue’s program at California State Prison, Lancaster. He shared that he has been able to take what he learned there and apply it here at Paws on the Block (POB), continuing his passion for helping dogs learn, grow, and find loving forever homes.

When asked what inspired him to join the program, Aaron’s answer was simple: the opportunity to help save the lives of shelter dogs, provide them with love, care, and training, and help them find happy and loving forever homes.

For Aaron, Paws on the Block is about more than dog training. It’s about purpose, growth, teamwork, and second chances.

One lesson life has taught him is to treat others the way you want to be treated and never burn bridges. He says what motivates him each day is his desire to make amends, show up for the dogs, support his teammates, and make his mom proud. The impact he hopes to leave on others is one rooted in kindness, fairness, and setting a good example.

Aaron believes deeply in second chances.

“Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. People can change, and many of us strive every day to be better people and give back to our communities.”

One of his favorite parts of the program is getting to know each dog’s unique personality and watching the moment training begins to click.

“We really get to know our dogs and pick up on their cues. I love seeing those huge breakthroughs when something finally clicks for them.”

And it’s safe to say each one of the POB dogs has touched his heart.

When asked if there were any dogs he particularly missed, Aaron immediately thought of Maggie and Freeya.

“I loved, and miss, cuddling with Maggie and Freeya.”

Moments like these serve as a reminder that the relationships formed within the program extend far beyond training plans and obedience cues. These dogs become companions, teachers, sources of comfort, and often leave pawprints on hearts long after they’ve moved on to their forever homes.

Paws on the Block isn’t rooted in perfection, it’s rooted in real life. It’s built on showing up, doing the work, supporting one another, and continuing to grow, one day at a time.

When asked what Paws on the Block means to him in one word, his answer was simple:

“Love and/or Te Amo.”

One of Aaron’s favorite memories from the program happened during a huge rainstorm when Max had an accident in his kennel. The handlers sprang into action, affectionately dubbing themselves “The Pit Crew.” While some cleaned the tier, others scrubbed the kennel in the rain and gave Max a bath. By the end, everyone was soaked, cold, and exhausted, but Aaron says the teamwork, pride, and appreciation they felt for one another made it one of the most memorable moments he’s experienced in the program.

Outside of the dogs, Aaron enjoys animals, music, movies, astronomy, sports, history, and culinary arts. He earned his Eagle Scout Award, played basketball on the Navy and Marine Corps basketball team in college, and hopes to one day attend law school, become a lawyer, travel internationally, help make the world a better place, and someday become a girl dad.

🐾 A Few Fun Facts About Aaron:

⚡ If he could have any movie sidekick, he’d choose Harry Potter!

🦃 If he could invent a dog treat flavor, it would be Thanksgiving Dinner, complete with layers of green bean casserole, candied yams, mashed potatoes and gravy, turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

🎸 If the Paws on the Block dogs formed a band, Aaron says Winter would be the lead singer, Rusty would play bass, Logan would be on guitar, and Banjo would be behind the drums. Their sound? Somewhere between Paramore, No Doubt, and The Pretenders.

💬 If the dogs had a group chat, Aaron thinks it would be called “Paws and Reflect,” “Unleashed and Unsupervised,” or “The Snuggle Squad.”

And perhaps the quote that best captures Aaron’s connection to the program:

“The difference that the dogs have made in my life is immense. Honestly, the dogs love me more than I love myself most of the time.”

Thank you, Aaron, for your dedication, compassion, humor, and commitment to both the dogs and your fellow handlers. We are grateful to have you as part of Paws on the Block and proud of the impact you’re making on both ends of the leash! ❤️🐾

🌸We have another addition to our adoption event tomorrow - meet ADOPTABLE JANE BENNETT🌸

Meet 25-Jane Bennet (aka Delphi)
Female
Standard Poodle
13 mos. old
approx. 50 lbs.
Housetrained: Yes
Crate trained: Yes
Dogs: Yes
Cats: Yes
Kids: 7+

Jane (Delphi) is a nice 13-month-old Poodle. She is very loving and shows she wants her pets and cuddles by laying her head in your lap. If you have another dog, you will have to work with her to make sure she takes turns sharing your attention because she is an attention hog!!!!!
She has learned to settle calmly in the house and go-to-bed. She is very calm, taking treats and waiting for her food and for you to put it down for her. She has learned to walk well on a Heathers Heroes headcollar. She knows sit, down, stay and has been going to our Saturday morning training classes from 9:30-10:30. She had a tendency to bark when she played but we have worked with her and she has learned to play quietly. We worked with her dad, and he turned out to be such a great dog, he has become a service dog.
She would make a great dog for just about any family.
She is a gentle, elegant Standard Poodle who is equal parts snuggle buddy, personal-space enthusiast (she doesn’t believe in it), and faithful supervisor of all household activities — including your bathroom breaks if you forget to close the door.
🐾 Dog & Cat Dynamics
She had lived with two small dogs and two cats, and she enjoys their company.
She has never shown aggression toward cats. She won’t chase unless one runs, and even then, it’s pure “wait, are we playing?” curiosity.
She’s wonderfully gentle with a kitten in the home who thinks he’s one of the dogs. They play beautifully together and she adjusts her energy to match his.
With other big dogs, she does well as long as they’re polite. She has played with friendly large dogs at the park, but she is sensitive — if a dog is too pushy or loud, she gives very clear, healthy signals that she’s done. A respectful dog companion would be a great match.

🗞️🐾 Extra, extra… save the date! 🗞️🐾

In August, Paws on the Block will officially celebrate its two year anniversary!

What started as an idea rooted in second chances has grown into something far bigger than we ever could have imagined. Over the last two years, Paws on the Block has become more than just a dog program, it has become a community. One built on compassion, healing, and purpose. From the dogs and incarcerated handlers, to the volunteers, adopters, supporters, and people who experience the program firsthand, its impact has reached far beyond what we ever anticipated.

Now it’s time to celebrate the community, handlers, adopters, supporters, volunteers, dogs, and partnerships that made it all possible.

An evening centered around:
• Celebrating community!
• Spreading the word about the program.
• Silent auction!
• Good food & good pups.
• A whole lot of heart and second chances!

📍 Brickyard in El Dorado Hills
📅 Wednesday, September 16th
⏰ 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM

If you are a local business interested in donating an item, experience, gift card, basket, or supporting our silent auction, we would absolutely love to connect with you. Please feel free to send us a message! ❤️

More details coming soon. We cannot wait to celebrate with you all!

🚨Marshmallow (aka Lainey) 4years old spayed female Pitty🚨
Available for adoption NOW!

In April, we pulled Marshmallow from the Stanislaus County shelter after volunteers fought to buy her a little more time. Like so many bully breeds, she was at risk simply because shelters are overflowing with them.

Her foster always has a soft spot for these dogs - this is what she has to say about them and Marshmallow specifically.

“They are some of the most misunderstood, yet some of the most loving and loyal dogs I’ve ever met. I know I can’t save them all, but if I can help save even a tiny fraction of the good ones, I have to try.

I took my kids down to meet her, and we all instantly fell in love. In just five weeks, she has battled kennel cough, gone through a heat cycle, dealt with allergies and hot spots, undergone pyometra surgery and her spay — all while staying incredibly loving, resilient, and trusting. ❤️

Marshmallow is now healthy, healed, and officially available for adoption.”

Here’s what we know about her:
🐾 AMAZING with my kids
🐾 Has done GREAT with my small male dog and large male dog (after a slow, proper introductions)
🐾 Perfectly crate trained
🐾 Loves lounging and being with her people

She has not been around cats or small animals while in my care, so I would recommend very slow, structured introductions with someone who understands bully breeds, prey drive, and proper management.

Please SHARE this sweet girl and help us find her a home!
