A reminder to all fellow rabbit breeders, you’re not alone when loss occurs. We all experience it and it hurts. Know you did all you could and try not to beat yourself up!
The Hardest Part of Breeding Rabbits 🖤
Today was one of those days no breeder ever wants to face.
I lost an entire litter.
You’d think after years of doing this, it might get easier. But it doesn’t. No matter how experienced you are, no matter how closely you monitor your does, how perfect the nest box is, sometimes nature still has the final say, and it’s cruel.
I did everything I could. The doe built her nest, everything looked textbook. But when I checked in this morning, all the kits were gone. Cold. Lifeless. I sat there for a while just staring, trying to process it. Then the self doubt begins to creep in. Did I miss something? Could I have done more? Was it my fault?
Breeding rabbits isn’t just cute babies and smiles. It’s early mornings, late nights, and hard decisions. It’s being a caretaker, a steward of life, and sometimes… a mourner. These animals depend on us. When something goes wrong, it hits hard.
To other breeders out there, I see you. I know this part hurts. I know we sometimes carry that weight silently. But you’re not alone.
To those who follow my page for the happy moments, I want you to know that behind every adorable kit photo is a world of responsibility, heartache, and lessons learned.
I’ll give the doe time to recover. I’ll reassess everything. And I’ll keep moving forward, because that’s what we do, not out of stubbornness, but out of love and commitment to the rabbits in our care.
Hug your buns for me today. 💔
