Paisley is one of our three summer interns and we asked her to jump in the deep end on her first day. She had a full day with pigs, cattle, and equine work.

There will be two other new faces on the truck this summer, we will introduce them all but keep an eye out for them ❤️

Paisley is a sophomore at Clemson University, with goals to pursue veterinary school after graduation.

In this photo she's helping "flip" a pig for her piggy dpa day and annual visit - this includes a physical exam, vaccines, hoof and tusk trim!

Trivia Tuesday Answer:

The fracture type was a salter harris type 1.of the tibia/fibula; these fractures happen at the growth plate of young animals. While that fracture was difficult to repair and did require surgical intervention- we were able to reduce the fracture and use external coaptation (a cast) to support the limb while this fracture healed.

This little goat has fully healed and is living her best life!

Trivia Tuesday:What type of fracture is this? Bonus: is it fixable?Find out the answer tomorrow!

We recommend all cattle owners have an operable chute and handling system.

While we can sometimes sedate these animals it is never a substitute for proper restraint.

While your animals may be very friendly we often see them when they are stressed, injured, sick and we usually need to give injections and get a complete physical exam. Unfortunately, there is no good way to explain the medical necessity of these procedures to your livestock.

Trivia Tuesday answer:

🐜 Pig lice, also known as hog lice (Haematopinus suis), are the only species of louse to infest pigs. They are large, blood-sucking parasites (about 5 to 6 mm long) that cause severe skin irritation, anemia in piglets, and secondary infections through scratching.

Don't worry; we treated these guys and everyone is louse free now!

Let's talk about FAMACHA scoring; this score is often used as an indirect way for farmers and veterinarians to check for internal parasites. It is not a perfect system however, the FAMACHA score looks at the color of the conjunctiva and is a good indicator of bloodflow and concentration.

However, besides internal parasites there are other reasons an animal may be anemic. There are also many intestinal parasites that do not cause an anemia.

While FAMACHA scores are useful and we still recommend checking them every time you have your hands on your small ruminant it's still best to work with a veterinary professional to help guide treatment plans.

Do you need a large animal vet? If you are within a 1-hour drive time of Pendleton, SC we can help! 864-337-3758 call or text us to get scheduled.

Life as a large animal veterinarian is often unpredictable; while we try to stay on schedule sometimes there are emergencies that take precedent over routine wellness appointments.

Luckily, most of our clients understand this as someday- we may be running to help their animal in a time of need.
