"Every dog has a full range of behavior possibilities. We can use behavior modification to help them learn to be comfortable with things they are currently not comfortable with. Describing the specific behaviors we see helps us make a plan to change them. Labeling a dog might lock us into acceptance of certain behaviors as something that can’t be changed." -Nancy Kelly, M.S., CPDT-KA.

Richard Julius Herrnstein (May 20, 1930 – September 13, 1994) was an American psychologist at Harvard University. His major research finding as an experimental psychologist is the matching law, the tendency of animals to allocate their choices in direct proportion to the rewards they provide. To illustrate the phenomenon, if there are two sources of reward, one of which is twice as rich as the other, Herrnstein found that animals often chose at twice the frequency the alternative that was seemingly twice as valuable. That is known as matching, both in quantitative analysis of behavior and mathematical psychology.
You can see how these methods are implemented by our own behavioral psychologist, Nancy Kelly, at themannerlydog.com, and you can sign up for free newsletter full of tips and tricks on pet training!

"This is one of the reasons I created the Beyond Basic Manners Program. It helps students learn to manage and train their dogs for real-world situations, and thus, Front Door Manners is a significant set of lessons. Yes, multiple lessons. Dogs and owners need several skills to put together in order to successfully navigate an event at the oh-so-exciting front door, where such amazing things happen! A few foundation skills can help you and your dog provide a calmer greeting for visitors, delivery personnel, or the kid from next door."
