Alright only 40 days late to the party for getting started but let’s see if this girl can catch up! Gigi is here and resting comfortably. The show must still go on so announcing this beautiful lady as Kodys new partner for Mustang Magic, a 6yr old bay mare from South Steens Oregon. If you know the Steens horses you know how amazing they are! Can’t wait to see how this team progresses!

Today was the day. As most of you know Gigi injured herself the day after arriving home with us. It looked bad….really bad, and at the advice of our vet we made her a small soft pen and waited to see what it would look like. Over the last 2 weeks we have done everything we can to get her to eat grain to feed through pain meds and anti-inflammation medication which she has had little to no interest in eating over her delicious hay. Also getting her as used to people in as low stress environment as we could to make working her less stressful. We all agreed if in 2 weeks time it wasn’t significantly better we would risk moving her into the chute and potentially making it worse to sedate her and get her x-rays to know exactly what we were dealing with. Walking into today the vet said less than 10% chance this is anything survivable given the way it looks. We set up an alley and calmly walked her into it slowly narrowing it as she backed away from us and into the chute….She never panicked and never kicked. Kody haltered her in the chute to help hold her head still and our vet administered intramuscular sedative to take the edge off so she could place the catheter to give IV sedative. After the intramuscular injection we had to wait around 20min for it to take full effect. We spent that 20min setting up the xray equipment pulling up drugs for euthanasia as that was going to be the most likely outcome. We talked over every possibility likely fractured pastern bone, possibly dislocated fetlock, catastrophic injury, made plans as once she was down and we took pictures we knew we’d only have minutes to make a decision….finally she was sleepy enough to safely insert the catheter and push enough sedation for her to lay down, our vet gave the drugs and we opened the chute into a small secure soft deep sandy pen where she could lay down safely. Didn’t take but a minute and she was out, our vet got all the X-rays they needed as quickly as possible. Watching her load and scroll through those images in silence took what felt like forever. And then she said it the thing honestly no one thought was gonna be a possibility….”I think she’s gonna be okay”. “No break, no dislocation, lots of soft tissue swelling.”….Gigi is tough as nails a true mature matriarch of a mustang mare she didn’t let us finish looking at the images before she got up and said “I’m not done fighting yet!” So we have a prognosis and a plan. Gigi should recover to at the very least pasture sound and could potentially recover completely but only time will tell, this isn’t days or even weeks, this is a months long process. But Gigi deserves every ounce of time she needs to recover and if she keeps fighting we will keep fighting for her.

Gigi amazes me, through this all she is still curious, calm, and trying to figure things out. The swelling is improving, and she is able to flex that joint now, although she still is clearly painful with full weight bearing. This will be small and slow baby steps to even get to a clear picture of what is going on but as long as she’s willing to keep fighting and we can keep her comfortable we will do everything possible to fix her. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers!

If you know us you know we have always valued transparency even when it’s hard or not cheerful information and today Gigi needs your support. The air quality has been terrible here due to the wildfires so Gigi has just been hanging out eating and settling in, 2 days ago while letting her get some exercise in the arena on her own while Kody did chores Gigi somehow hurt herself. I’ll never understand how a 1000lbs animal can be so fragile and if you own horses I know you know what I mean. Her injury is severe, we have the best vets involved and all the means to do everything we can for her. Since she is still wild our options are limited so she is currently on stall rest to prevent as much movement as possible. We are able to get her pain and anti inflammatory medication through soaked alfalfa pellets currently. Our vets advised against putting her in the chute to sedate and xray her as the risk of her kicking the back wall of the chute could be catastrophic to her leg if there is a healable fracture there. So for now they advise us to wait, medicate, cold hose, and pray. It could be a sprain to the fetlock or it could be a break we won’t know for sure until we can safely xray it. So for now we wait we spend time with her we focus on getting her to trust us enough to halter her and administer sedation without pushing her into a chute so we can xray. Just a few days ago Kody was so hopeful for this mare and Magic and daydreaming of all the possibilities…now we are in a fight for her life for reasons I’ll never understand….This 11yr old wild mare has no reason to trust us to help her but please send your thoughts prayers good vibes whatever it is you do towards her that she understands we are trying to help and to us as we hope our knowledge and experience gives us enough tools to do what’s needed and give her all the chances possible to recover. 💔

And so it begins…Kody isn’t asking anything of her just simply sharing the space. Over the years we’ve found setting the standard from the moment they unload that we are going to be in their area and cause them no harm prevents any possession tendencies that can arise if a horse claims a space before you ever enter it. This isn’t the training pen but a temporary safe small paddock with shelter and plenty of shade for her to relax in when not working and a space we want her to feel comfortable with us in as we will need to be in it with her multiple times a day!

Finally on the home stretch! slept well ate well and drank plenty overnight! It’s already almost 90 degrees this morning! Thankful for open slats and a good breeze on the way home!

Everyone that knows Kody LaPoint knows he’s a bit unconventional about things. When he got the invite to compete in Magic this year he really wasn’t sure, we like the competitions but have had some bad luck with the horses we’ve drawn and just life getting in the way. With the new format of being able to pick your own horse, extended time frame, and of course being the first show back since loosing Stormy, Kody said let’s go for it. So we get to the facility today to pick out a horse for these shows people often choose 3-4yr old young horses built well to hold up to the rigorous timeline. We searched through over 100 horses in the typical age range and not a single thing stood out, there was pretty horses, friendly horses, but really nothing that excited Kody. We wrote down a few numbers to go back to the office and find out more info on them, on the way back we walked through the older mares pen, and Kody locked eyes with this massive Dun mare and the biggest smile came on his face….i knew then this was the one he was picking. We get back to the office none of the geldings we wrote down were anything he wanted, so I asked about the mare crossing my fingers she was like 6. She was 11yrs old, I thought to myself, there’s no way he will say yes…..he asked hma….Twin Peaks, CA…..I immediately knew she was coming home with us haha 😆 of the dozens of hmas we have worked with over the years Twin Peaks is Kodys favorite. So here we go I guess 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️. Grandma is going to be 12yrs old by show date, she’s as wide as she is tall and her ears about touch the roof of the trailer 😅. Idk that she’s what literally anyone else would have picked but here we are! She’s butt branded for long term holding and all but she’s been sitting at elm creek for 2 years after someone passed on her from an online corral adoption in 2024. So if you’re into following the thing that’s not like the others in these kind of competitions follow along to see how Hot Grandma Gigi does 😂😅.
