Standing is its own gate & is not optional— particularly when mounting. But also so, when waiting on another horse while riding, on the trail, arena or wherever.
With young horses it’s important to be clear with your cues, so they understand that 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐭.
Work between moving them out purposefully (feeling where they’re at mentally) & finding a place to release, so they seek out stopping, with understanding.
By standing, we mean relaxed expressions & confident. Not frozen. Not jigging. This makes for a safe & enjoyable ride for you AND those around you!
