⭐ Staff Spotlight from Second Chance ⭐

Rose Grimm became the Shelter Director at Second Chance in late 2020, bringing with her nearly 13 years of experience in the animal welfare industry and a hunger for even more knowledge. Rose maintains credentials from the National Animal Care and Control Association, and continues her animal welfare education through Best Friends Animal Society and Southern Utah University to further improve her capacity for care. Rose is the backbone of our shelter and is always working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly and all our animals and staff are taken care of. In times of stress, Rose remains laser-focused on considering every possible course of action to resolve the issue, and she always acts confidently and decisively no matter how dire the situation may be. Every day at the shelter is made brighter by Rose's heartfelt compliments and contagious laughter; Second Chance is lucky to have her at the helm! ❤️

We caught up with our Shelter Director, Rose Grimm, to see how things have been going the last few months since we temporarily closed our doors for remodeling. Here’s what she shared:

“I’ve been missing the chaos and joy of our incredible staff, volunteers, and fosters lately. I think about Evelyn (our volunteer) spending hours on the floor in the cat room, patiently socializing the kitties. I remember Helen (another volunteer) answering phones and emails, giving the staff some much-needed relief. The rose bush mural in the community cat room, or the scent sticks in the Big Woof area that always seemed to make the dogs so happy-the day to day sorta things that made big impacts for the animals in our care and the people who loved them.

I think of Patti cracking jokes—the kind that might make a sailor blush but never fail to get a laugh from a group dealing with kitty hairballs—and Allen and Michael keeping me in the loop with the latest “poop” on the new arrivals. One of my favorite things was watching our team grow in confidence, whether they were learning to give vaccines, working together in doggie playgroups, or helping good families meet good pets.

These memories remind me of all the heart and effort that went into making our shelter such a special place and I know we’ll create even more when we reopen! Thankfully the program is in the capable hands of our board of directors and building committee, who have been hard at work making plans for the future—and probably drinking a lot of coffee along the way!

In the meantime, I’ve been staying busy. I recently earned my Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification, giving me tools to better support our community. The shelter team hasn’t slowed down either—we’re headed to California soon for the Best Friends Animal Rescue Conference and to learn from other shelters. I’m especially excited to see their emergency response protocols and maybe lend a paw in fire relief efforts.

Even while we’re temporarily closed, there’s no shortage of meaningful work and opportunities to grow. It’s always a good day to save lives!!”

✨ Big update, friends! ✨

We’re 90% done with the blueprint for our new shelter space (!!) thanks to Cody Douglas and the amazing team at Krittenbrink Architecture LLC. 💼📐

This redesign lives inside our existing shelter and includes:

🌀 Sealed, waterproof floors with proper drainage
🩺 An open-floor veterinary space, ready for our future on-site vet to do their thing
🗣️ A big conference room for staff trainings + team huddles
😌 An open-concept community cat room with a patio—because our felines deserve fresh air too
🚨 Quarantine areas for sick or vulnerable incoming critters who need a little extra TLC
🐹 A cozy pocket pet room—yep, we’ve got love (and space!) for the littles too

…and so much more—including
a few well-deserved treats for the goodest boys and girls, of course 🦴🐾

Next up: figuring out construction costs and finalizing plans before we present to the city! If you’re feeling generous and want to be part of something meaningful, you can donate to our construction fund here: https://secondchancenorman.networkforgood.com

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

Second Chance Animal Sanctuary is humbled by the ongoing support of fosters and volunteers! The success of the adoption event with Subaru of America, Inc. and the Oklahoma City International Auto Show was made possible by the 20 people that came together to help our animals find their second chance. You rarely meet a person so selfless and devoted, and we are honored to have so many as volunteers. Thank you so much for the immeasurably valuable work you have done for our nonprofit during this event! You are all rockstars: Christine, Amy, Steve, Joan, Elizabeth, Naomi, Dujeau, Kristina, Brad, Steve, Savannah, Mike, Shelia, Jaquitta, Allison, Natalie, Sara, Nancy and Anne!
