- Soju and Gingerbread House!

"This is Soju and Gingerbread House. My husband took me to Second Chance to get a cat for Christmas in 2023. I had a cat in mind that I had seen online but couldn't find him. My husband is allergic to long haired cats, so he went to the outside part of the cat room. After a few minutes I joined him outside to find a kitten had climbed all the way up to his shoulder. She walked back and forth between our shoulders and we knew she had picked us.

A few months later, my husband said, "Let's check out the dogs. We won't get one, I just want to see them."

We went home with a dog.

Today, Soju likes to play cards and keep her baby brother's swing warm. Ginger likes to sleep with her tongue out and sit under her baby brother's chair to vacuum up the food he drops. "

You know Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Well ... we decided Second Chance Animal Rescue needs its own version!

That's where Stellah comes in!

She's been exploring the shelter and checking out all the new spaces. So, we thought we'd start our own little game!

Over the next few weeks, were going to post pictures of Stellah in different spots around the shelter and your job is to guess where she is! 👇Drop your guess in the comments BUT we're not confirming whether you are right or wrong 😉

You'll have to keep following along ... and then come to our 🎉 Grand Re-Opening! 🎉 on October 3rd to see the shelter for yourself and find out how good your detective skills really are.

☺️Happy, enriched animals are more likely to show their true personalities, handle shelter life better, and get adopted faster. And even when they don’t get adopted right away, enrichment helps make their time with us happier, healthier, and less stressful.

We’ve been working on a detailed enrichment schedule for the animals who will soon be in our care, and we would LOVE for our community to be part of it!

We’re looking for things like food puzzles, lick mats, snuffle activities, toys, towels, and more!

"On September 3rd, 2022, we rescued our sweet gremlin girl, Duchess!

We were looking for a second dog to keep our Border Collie, Lady, company while their dad was overseas. We originally planned on a puppy, but knowing Lady could be reactive, we needed the right match.

I had volunteered at Second Chance in college, so I checked the adoption page. The first dog we saw was a scrawny little black dog named “Duchesse.” We sat in the parking lot until the shelter opened, met her first, and immediately fell in love. I practically ran inside to sign the paperwork!

We had always planned to name our second dog Duchess since our first was Lady, so finding her felt like fate.

Duchie was about a year old and had clearly had a rough start. She struggled with anxiety, health issues, and some very interesting fears. Watching her learn to be a dog and blossom into the happy, silly girl she is today has been one of our greatest joys. Now 5, she loves snuggles, sunbathing, chasing anything smaller than her 😂, and being right beside her sister. We recently found out she's an Australian Cattle Dog/Pit Bull Terrier mix—which explains SO much!

Everyone who meets Duchess loves her, and we couldn't be happier that this once-scrawny shelter dog became our goofy, loving, perfect girl!"

🦸Most heroes don’t wear capes… they’re the amazing people who come together to help someone else when they need it most. Today, our hero is AJ Robbins appliance repair !

We needed some help getting our dryers moved into place and hooked up, and he didn’t hesitate for a second to step in and save the day! He even cleaned them out, who knew they could get that dirty!?

We are so incredibly grateful for businesses in our community who are willing to lend a helping hand and support our mission. It truly means more than you know!

🌈Today is and while we were cleaning out boxes, we came across a rainbow collar and a paw print from one of the pets we lost a couple of years ago. It reminded us just how much those little lives mean to us, even years later.

We know that when you’ve loved and lost a pet, you think about them every day. But today is a day to pause and give them a little extra love, remembrance, and celebration.

Today, we’re remembering the ones who loved us without boundaries and became our forever sidekicks. The ones who may no longer be beside us but will always have a place in our hearts.

We’d love for you to share a photo of your beloved pet who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and tell us their story. Let’s fill the comments with their faces, their memories, their silly quirks, and all the reasons we were lucky enough to love them.

Today, we celebrate them.

We’re getting closer and closer to opening our doors, and we couldn’t be more excited!

As we prepare to welcome animals, we still have a few things we need to make their space comfortable, clean, and enriching.

From toys and enrichment items to cleaning supplies and bedding... every donation helps!

We also gladly accept clean blankets and towels! If you have extras you’re no longer using, our animals would love them. We will even take cleaned off empty toilet paper rolls like pictured below!
