Ruby is well trained from her previous owner who loved and cared for her very much. Due to circumstances outside of their control, Ruby is looking for another great home.

BOBCAT FEVER: A DEADLY DISEASE CAT OWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT!

We recently encountered our first confirmed case of Bobcat Fever here at the Moore Animal Welfare & Adoption Center.

While this was a heartbreaking situation, we want to use this opportunity to raise awareness about a potentially deadly disease that many pet owners may not know exists.

🚨 WHAT IS BOBCAT FEVER?

Bobcat Fever, also known as Cytauxzoonosis, is a serious tick-borne disease that affects domestic cats. It is caused by a parasite transmitted through the bite of an infected tick.

Despite its name, your cat does NOT have to encounter a bobcat to become infected!

⚠️ WHY IS IT SO DANGEROUS?

Bobcat Fever can progress incredibly quickly and is often fatal, even with treatment. Symptoms may include:

🐾 Sudden lethargy or weakness

🐾 Loss of appetite

🐾 High fever

🐾 Difficulty breathing

🐾 Pale or yellow-tinged gums

🐾 Rapid decline in health

Symptoms can develop within days to weeks after an infected tick bite, and once a cat becomes ill, its condition can deteriorate rapidly.

❤️ HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR CAT?

✅ Keep cats indoors whenever possible. Indoor cats have a much lower risk of exposure to infected ticks.

✅ Use veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention. Make sure the product is specifically labeled as SAFE FOR CATS. Some tick treatments made for dogs are extremely toxic to cats!

✅ Check your pets regularly for ticks, especially if they spend time outdoors.

✅ Maintain your yard by keeping grass trimmed and reducing areas where ticks may thrive.

✅ Seek veterinary care immediately if your cat develops sudden illness, fever, or unusual lethargy, especially following possible tick exposure.

🐈 PLEASE REMEMBER: Bobcat Fever is not spread through casual contact between cats. It is primarily transmitted through infected tick bites.

We share this information not to cause alarm, but to help pet owners recognize the risks and take steps to protect their feline family members.

One tiny tick can have devastating consequences. Prevention and early veterinary attention matter! ❤️

Tiny paws, around-the-clock care. 🐾🍼

This newborn kitten arrived at our shelter all alone, and we didn’t know how long it had been since its last meal. While we worked to find a foster, ACO Mays stepped in to syringe-feed this little one. ❤️

Neonatal kittens depend on their mom—or a dedicated caregiver—for nearly everything:

🍼 Frequent feedings: The youngest kittens need kitten milk replacer about every two hours, including overnight. Feeding schedules change as they grow.

🌡️ Warmth: They can’t regulate their body temperature yet. Keeping them safely warm is essential.

🐾 Help going potty: Young kittens can’t use the bathroom on their own, yet, typically momma cats help with that, so in these situations, it is essential that neonate kittens are stimulated.

If you find a newborn kitten without a mom nearby, please contact your local shelter or rescue for guidance. Mom may be out looking for food, so being alone doesn’t always mean a kitten is abandoned. If the kitten is cold, injured, or weak, seek help right away.
