The back corner of our hoophouse is a dry area which is perfect for these eremurus plants called desert candles. This is yr three for one patch and they have made it to over seven feet! What do you do with 7’ flowers? These boys know! 😆. Charm and her pups are doing well but that’s a lot to feed and we separate them into two groups to make sure everyone is eating. We’re trying to keep things in perspective with all this rain, there’s a lot places that would love to have it and if this yr is like others it will stop soon and not come back for months.

These little yellow alliums have the common name “sunny twinkles”, probably the sunniest thing we’ll see at tomorrow’s market! The big day has come for Charm, she had the first puppy at 1:00 and several times we thought she was done, she just had number 11 fifteen minutes ago!! An hour ago she had to go outside with the other dogs in the rain and she came back with a puppy in her mouth! It’s been a long exciting day,and we’re all ready for some rest , Charm is looking relaxed,Busy times ahead! Life is good!

Our little Charm is not so little now! She is due on Saturday but was a couple days early last time so hopefully it’s soon and she can get on with this puppy thing!🥰 We’ll have a unique assortment of peony plants at this weeks Granville market. We will have both pink and lavender tree peonies that we potted up a couple months ago, also Itoh bush peony roots we just bought as well as big pink double peony roots that will produce flowers with an “old fashioned” fragrance. See you Saturday!

Thanks to everyone who came out to this mornings market and braved the weather,we bailed at 10:30 when the rain hit ! This means we have more flowers for the Fredonia farm store. This bouquet has lovely pink peonies with purple wisteria,a nice pairing!

As much as I want it to be planting time outside ,it’s just not ! Bulbs and perennials are fine,so are cold lovers like snap dragons and lisianthus but not the tropicals like dahlias or tomatoes. We started digging holes for dahlias but as soon as we get a couple inches deep the soil gets cold! Cold and wet is a recipe for rotten tubers. Just can’t fight that last frost date! We’re making peony bouquets for tomorrow’s Granville market as well as some for the store In Fredonia. Peonies get picked when their buds get to the “marshmallow “stage, not open but will open in a day or two. This makes bouquets a little less than spectacular, but with loads of potential, which is fine for experienced buyers but others will have to have some faith! Charm is two wks from having pups, tonight’s rain is supposed to pass before tomorrow’s market, life is good!

One of the best things we’ve done was putting peonies in one of our two hoophouses. Fungal disease is often spread by rain and we struggle to keep our outdoor plants in good shape. Peonies really need to have their old foliage removed every fall and for us it’s easier to keep things cleaned up in a finite space than in our occasionally wild outdoor beds. We’ll have some beautiful,(and super healthy !) peonies Saturday at the Granville Farmers Mrkt. Looks like we’ll be wearing boots, the world is soggy round here!
