Good Dog Manners Level 2 is starting soon and we have two options: Tuesday evenings for smaller breeds/mixes and Saturday mornings for larger breeds/mixes.

Sam the aussiedoodle hasn’t had pleasant experiences with dogs in the past. His growling and lunging signaled to his person that greeting other dogs was not a good idea. Today we started giving him the opportunity for a fresh start. He and his person were amazing, as was Leia the helper dog and her person Krista. What a great walk we had!

Imagine turning away from your dog, yelling at him, pushing him away, kneeing him, confining him, shocking him, or even turning him over to the shelter just because he asked for your affection. It happens all the time when we misunderstand what our dogs are trying to communicate to us with their jumping or mouthing behavior. Some of these behaviors are very uncomfortable for us humans, but when we realize that the dog is actually doing all of this to get our affection in the only way they know how, it helps us understand how to teach them to ask for affection in more desirable ways. Bruce knew Sit, Down, Come, and walk nicely on leash, but his jumpy mouthy behavior was not resolved by obedience training,but instead by someone who saw what he truly desired (not treats for sitting) and gave him the love and affection he desperately wanted.
I have been studying and applying this approach, Constructional Affection, with Sean Will and Maasa Nishimuta for over a year now and wanted to share this sad but informative video of them sharing their knowledge with groups across the globe with the mission of No More Bruce’s.
When I coach you to give your dog affection rather than the old school turn away and ignore, there is a reason.
If you know anyone who is struggling with dogs who incessantly jump and mouth, separately excited when family or friends arrive, please send them my way. I hate to think of dogs being punished for asking for love.
