🐾 Fundraising Friday: Let's talk about the unglamorous side of rescue... 🐱

Everyone loves seeing a cat find their forever home, but have you ever wondered what it costs to get them there?

In 2025 alone, our baseline bill for just food, litter, and everyday care supplies came out to $13,142.

That means we have to clear an average of $1,096 a month just to keep our shelter and foster network stocked with the bare essentials.
It’s a quiet, recurring cost, but it is exactly what makes saving lives possible.

It’s been about four months since Leo’s mom brought him home, and he and her dog, Boone, have become the best of friends.

Leo seems especially fond of Boone—he follows him everywhere and loves nothing more than sleeping right by his side.

We absolutely love hearing stories about how our alumni are doing and seeing the special bonds they’ve formed in their forever homes. ❤️

We have to admit… it’s always a pawsitively wonderful surprise when Almost Home Cat Rescue MKE gets included in Milwaukee Magazine’s Best of Milwaukee edition! 🐾❤️

This annual celebration of the Cream City’s finest is full of so many amazing people, places, and organizations — and we’re truly honored to have our little corner of the cat world included. 🐱✨

To everyone who helps us rescue, foster, adopt, donate, volunteer, cheer us on, and give our cats the happy endings they deserve: this recognition belongs to you, too. ❤️

What does the Operations Officer & Team do at a volunteer-run cat rescue?

They’re the reason the space works.

From the outside, you see open house, adoptions, and happy cats.

Behind the scenes? It’s the ongoing work that keeps everything functional.

It’s not about the day-to-day shifts - it’s about making sure the space itself can support everything that happens inside it.

That means:
🔧 Handling maintenance and repairs
🏗️ Fixing issues as they come up
📞 Coordinating with the landlord when repairs are needed
🛠️ Keeping the space safe, functional, and up to standard

Because things break.
Wear and tear happens.
And in a rescue… it happens often.

And when it does— someone has to step in and take care of it.

That’s the operations team.

It’s not always visible.
It’s not always easy.
But it’s essential.

Because without a safe, working space - nothing else can happen.

Behind every open door, every adoption, every clean and safe environment… there’s a team making sure the foundation holds. 🐾💛

Did you know that about 80% of ginger cats are male? Or that their beautiful fiery coats are all thanks to a pigment called pheomelanin—the same one responsible for red hair in humans?

Whether they’re goofy, sweet, spunky, or full of single-orange-braincell energy, orange tabbies hold a special place in our hearts. 🍊✨
